I was going to ask what camera you're using, but I see K5IIs in your signature. I recently upgraded from a K20D, now to a new K5II. The FA 43 was a really good lens on the K20, but now it's hands-down my absolute favorite lens I've ever used or owned. (And I've gone through quite a few.) It's funny that I've used far more expensive lenses, too, but nothing has beaten the image quality of the FA 43 yet.
However, this past Fall I did have some disappointing results with it, while on a brief trip to Copper Harbor and around Michigan's Keewenaw Peninsula, in the U.P. That was still using the K20D. So when I got home and ran the photos through LightRoom, I was disappointed at a lack of detail at infinity. It turns out the in-camera AF adjustment had somehow been changed. (Which was very strange how that could've ever happened.) Every lens was reset to "Zero", and the camera itself was set to "- 2".
Is it possible that something like that is going on? I find the FA 43 very sharp, and quite often use it for full-body or 3/4 length portraits, shooting at f2.0 - f2.8. One problem encountered there, is that if one needs fill flash, the shutter speed needs to be knocked way down. For that, a B+W CPL works perfectly. Otherwise, I might suspect you've gotten a bad copy, because it should be sharp. FWIW, I was also pleasantly surprised with the new K5II, as far as lens calibration. Whereas the K20D needed some adjustment one way or the other, for most lenses, so far the K5II has been spot-on, no adjustments required whatsoever. And the AF is very quick and accurate, the results are great. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade! Good luck, hope you can get to the bottom of the problem.
