Are you sure its not an M f2.0? Sometimes they write it as 50mm f1:2, but 1:2 means 2.0, not 1,2. I don't think there was an M series f1.2 lens.
Pentax f1.2 lenses:

Third party f1.2 lenses:

The Pentax 50mm f2.0 is not the best 50mm lens, you might prefer to get a f1.7 or f1.4, but with 50mm lenses you can hardly go wrong, none are terrible. But you know, if someone is trying to sell an f2.0 as f1.2, they probably shouldnt get your money. Buy a M 50mm f1.7 instead (a little sharper than 2.0 and a little faster) or a A series (A lenses allow some automation that M and K series don't)

Pentax M 50mm f2.0:

Pentax M 50mm f1.7 (very popular lens):

Yup, Na Horuk is right, there is no M-50mm f1.2, there is however an A-50mm f1.2, but those are hard to find. My guess would be the same as Na Horuk, probably 1:2, which means f/2.

I would definitely either go for the 1.7 or 1.4. I would recommend the A series if you can find one, that way you dont have to manually 'stop down' the lens to get the correct exposure. The 1.7 is sharp, but the bokeh is not as smooth as the 1.4. Most likely due to the fact the 1.7 has 6 aperture blades and the 1.4 has 8. Better yet the A-50mm f1.2 has 9... but like I said, hard to find and expensive I am sure. I own both the M-f1.7 and the A-f1.4 and use the A-1.4 quite a bit. I would say the 1.4 and 1.7 are about equally sharp, but again, it is the bokeh that sets them apart.

Agree with NewTake. I have the A50 f1.4 - its a wonderful lens and I'm very happy with it. I also have A50 f1.7, M50 f1.7, M50 f1.4 and Super Tak 50 f1.4 but the A50 F1.4 is by far the best out of these in my opinion (except for build quality!).

I have a SMC Pentax 1:1.2/50mm, no A on it anywhere. I also have a SMC Pentax-M 1:1.4 50mm, no A on it anywhere. So even if my f1.2 doesn't exist elsewhere, it is real here. Now my query, I prefer to use the 1.4, believing it to be sharper than the 1.2 at f8. Does anyone agree, or is it just in my head?

Your SMC is usually called the 'K' version. Whether you call it a K or not, though, it certainly isn't an 'M'.

To the OP - the K's aren't that expensive... double check these numbers but I'm recalling $200-400. The A's are quite a bit more, something like $600-800 IIRC. I haven't looked in a while, though, so double check those numbers with eBay completed listings or similar.
