Assuming you can find a good copy of both and not one that has problems associated with age, the Pentax will probably give you better sharpness wide open at f2 and the the Jupiter will give you smoother, more attractive bokeh or background blur. I love my Jupiter 9 but I usually use it stopped down to between f/2.8 and f/8 (frequently using it at f/4).

If you plan to adjust the aperture while shooting video then I recommend the Jupiter 9 because changing the aperture is smoother without the hard clicks of the aperture ring on the Pentax 85mm.

Shouldnt be a problem, i have a couple variable ND filters..

I have a helios 44-2, and the focus ring is near the back, is the Jupiter 9 like that too? I find it a bit inconvenient...

Yes, many of the old Russian lenses use the aperture rings near the front and the larger focus rings in the rear

Aperture and preset rings are at the front with the focus immediately behind. The actual size and spacing depends on what flavor J-9 you have. For black models in native M42 mount, the focus ring is generous while the preset ring can be a little hard to manage (narrow clearance) if focus is near infinity.

Here is a picture of my copy mounted on a 35mm SLR to give you a good idea of layout and size.

(...there is a good review on this site and Google should give you a decent pictures of the variations...)

For clarification...the aperture ring on a J-9 has stepped click stops. It is the stop-down (pre-set) ring that is stepless. The trick is to set the aperture at f/16 and use the pre-set ring to smoothly close the blades.
