First I used: F 70-210: - fast focus, - noisy focusing, - contrast and saturated colors, - the front element rotates, - a heavy,
second I used: Sigma APO 70-300: quick-focus, color cooler than Pentax, no sharp-edges over 200mm,-large,-rotating front element,
I use DA 55-300 ED:-color nicer than Sigma APO - the front element does not rotate, - dimensions smaller than the Sigma APO - sharpness along the entire length and width - lighter than the F70-210, - focuses slower than both,
I am satisfied with the DA 55-300 ED

I'm hoping to get something cheap.

So far, the best options seem to be:
Probably the best IQ ---> Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.6

Under $100 in the marketplace --->Sigma DC 55-200mm f/4-5.6

Don't ignore the older manual focus lenses. I just got a f3.8 fixed, and and it weighs a ton, but I think it gives good pics. took this one this am handheld to look at the bokeh. it was $50. I don't plan to use it more than maybe 5-10% of the time, so I didn't want to put $300 into it.
Unfortunately, I wasn't keeping track of f-stops..
I have a couple of manual focus lenses from back in the day. They didn't fare too well with the K-x, but the K-30 with its focus peaking has been a game changer for me with those. I also discovered I need reading glasses (boooooo...) so using those with the peaking has given me some outstanding results on the few times I've used one of my old manual zooms. Right now I have a 50mm 1.4 semi-permanently sealed to the lens and its sharing time with a Sigma 10-20mm so... not much time for much else. :-D Hoping come better weather to change that.

The 55-300 is my pick. I have one and it's very sharp right to 300mm.
