Lens Repair

Hei Folks,
I got given some Jap made screw mount lenses by my brother and one them (a rather nice 300mm) has a damaged thread and will only screw on about half way.

Is there a tap available to recut the thread, alternatively could I pick up a junk lense and swap the mounting collar over.
I'm a last year manual arts (what you yanks call shop) teacher so once I know how I reckon the repair will be within my ability.

Cheers
Paul

Make sure the lens isn't a T mount instead of Pentax screw. T threads will screw onto a Pentax part way. If the threads are damaged it might be possible to replace the rear of the lens. Guessing it would be difficult to find the same rear end from another lens.
thanks

ps - The abbreviation of Japanese used is considered poor by many.

Thanks for the info.
To those offended by the use of the word "Jap" my apologies - used purely as an abbreviation and no offence intended.

Can you actually see the damaged portion on the threads?
fwiw a Tap puts threads on the inside of a hole, a Die puts threads on the outside of stud, or in your case lens mount.
If you could find the proper die (unlikely) It its possible that you could chase the threads and restore them.
If you can actually see the damaged threads, you could (since it's probably aluminum) use a very sharp "v" pointed tool to hand scrape out the damaged portion of the thread
but first make sure that's really the problem

For a person in his last year shop (what you POMEs call Manual Arts) you would think you would know what a tap and a die is.

Anyway, the T-mount sounds like the best solution to me unless of course the thread is too damaged.
