The argument of QC issue from other manufacturers is just silly IMHO because C/N 2.8 zooms can AF far faster than anything SDM. They fail because of either defective motors or wear and tear, not substandard designs like SDM. If high performance 2.8 zooms are that important, why not just pick what are available on the market now instead of dreaming Pentax might address the damn SDM on day which may not come?
That may be so, but I would have thought they would all have been using the same drive motors from the same group of manufacturers. I think it's been fairly well established now that the fault lies in the motor sticking, and not in the mechanism failing (reports of motors "burning out" are vague terms used to justify a replacement - piezo motors aren't like ac or dc motors, as there are no windings, brushes or commutators to burn out, and mine was just plain stuck, as were those of others who undertook the remedial process themselves). That doesn't rule out faulty design (probably selecting the wrong drive motor for the duty). So, the reality is that Pentax's SDM failures are much the same as those of the others, ie faulty motors, but failing earlier, where they fail at all.

What would you call this?
Not a design fault but a feature... sounds like Apple

Similarly the Canon 70-200 fails for a couple of different reasons, but jammed zoom rings are common and caused by a tooth breaking on the nylon ‘reversing’ gear under the zoom ring.
Here a bit about the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 wear and tear

There might be a possibility that the blue update will come with an option to start at the desktop, but there are already ways to do that within windows 8 without additional software.

About the start button, well it's still there but it leads you to the metro menu... no idea if the blue update will do anything about that...
