Yeah but with the first you've warranty with the hack you loose everything.

Here in the EU you can make an appeal that a product shouldn't fail that fast so you have extended warranty.
The firmware hack is reversible, you know. Just change it back to the standard programming and it's done.

It's no worse a display of ethics than what Pentax displays with its shoddy, expensive SDM lenses that it fails to stand behind in many cases.

The EU has many theoreticals to consumer law. The tough part is trying to get the theoretical to become a reality for you.

It's made much worse by pentax owners being incredible spineless, for no better way to say it, as they seem to love paying for the repairs, which seem to be subsidizing Pentax's operations as they continue to throw parts at the problem.

This is actually pretty close to how Mercedes works.

Firmware is not the only way, the type/way of damage is also an indication.

I'll argue that these lenses are damaged out of the factory, leading to their eventual and expensive failures.

The movement where people will actually defend an item that lasts just barely through the warranty period is quite disturbing and the manufacturers know that the expectation now is an item that only lasts until the warranty is up, then becomes so expensive to repair, it needs to be replaced.

And we, as consumers, reward this.

We even defend it.
