DA` 50-135 focus problem???

I was just doing my daily dreaming while saving money to buy this lens. I checked Amazon.com and drooled a little until I decided to read the reviews. There are only a couple of reviews, but one of them only gave this lens 2 stars!! As I read the review, the complaint revolved around bad focusing issues that sound like the old 16-50 issues. I reread it again and confirmed to myself that he was talking about the 50-135. Is this an isolated issue or have I just been too starry eyed to notice it being discussed?

I hope that it is fairly isolated issue, but (and this is not to scare anyone away from this lens) I too had AF issue with this lens, got it from B&H, medium to low light - AF was terrible, and any images other than in perfect light were soft and milky in my copy. I sent it back, and going to wait a little, will probably buy it again with 16-50mm sometime this spring summer and hope for a good copies.

Regards,
D

P.S - you in NY, try it at the store at B&H before you buy it?

Well, also quite some 50-135 copies have problems.
This is a fact. Just read the forums.
But it is not as strong a desaster as with the 16-50.

And since now the Tamron 17-50 appears, it is not Pentax alone.
Almost all Tamrons I have heard of have AF problems.

I've actually been reading everything I've seen posted on the 50-135 (but not searching past posts). This comment at Amazon is the first I've heard of problems.

No focus problems with my 50-135 and K10D

I decided to check out the focusing of this lens by giving it what I consider a very difficult task. Here is the best of 16 shots I took of our canary at minimum focusing distance. He lives in a cage with white bars - and the AF system just loved grabbing them, believe me!

I found that my lens and camera combination had the center focus spot in the exact center of the circle in the center of my LL80 architectural grid screen. The camera was able to focus on the bird's eye and feathers quite well. Here is the best of the lot, focused between the bars. He is about 9 inches behind the bars. The center spot (I was in spot focus, of course) is on his chest feathers. Shot is hand held. I allow my camera to float between ISO 100 and 400 only. I could have used more for this, but did not.

Somehow or other, I don't seem to be able to keep the EXIF data (at least I cannot see it), so here is a capsule:

Focal length: 135.0mm
Shutter speed: 1/30sec
Aperture: F2.8
Program Automatic Exposure, Multi-segment metering
AWB
ISO 400
Single AF, Spot
sRGB, Natural
Saturation 0, Sharpness 1, Contrast 2
SR on

One common problem of the 50-135 is e.g. that it shows backfocus at 50mm.
It appears at various degrees, some accept it, some not.
Check it at infinity.
