Pentax DA 40mm Limited --> 9.64
Pentax DA 18-55WR --> 7.53
Pentax F 35-70 --> 8.71
Pentax F 70-210 --> 8.42
Average --> 8.58

Since Today:
Tokina RMC 17mm f/3.5 --> 9.00
Kiron MC 24mm f/2 --> 9.00
Pentax DA 40mm Limited --> 9.64
Helios 40-2 85mm f/1.5 --> 9.00
Pentax F 35-70mm --> 8.71
Average --> 9.07

Starting tomorrow:

Tokina RMC 17mm f/3.5 --> 9.00
Kiron MC 24mm f/2 --> 9.00
Pentax DA 40mm Limited --> 9.64
Pentax DA 70mm Limited --> 9.39
Average --> 9.26

I was planning on getting the Sigma 17-50/2.8 (non-OS, 8.86) next but that would mean lowering my average.
Please, spare me that unspeakable misery and sell me a FA20/2.8 instead, I beg you!

My bag currently has the following, a couple of K-5s (classic type) and a few primes. This morning I decided to do a quick average of my lens ratings and from a set of 7 lens, I came to an average value of 9.59

K35 f/3.5 - 9.74
K55 f/1.8 - 9.41
A50 f/1.2 - 9.43
FA31 f/1.8 - 9.47
FA43 f/1.9 - 9.57
FA50 f/1.7 - 9.7
FA77 f/1.8 - 9.79

Some observations:
FA77 Limited is probably the best design overall (tend to agree, but are not telephotos easiest to design? ) + its a very pretty lens
FA50 f/1.7 and K35 f/3.5 - very highly rated, I wonder if sharpness is THE big driver for some?
FA31 f/1.8 This is an interesting one, urban myths about the MiJ vs MiV, big and bulky front element, useless hood, but cost is holding it down ratings wise methinks
K55 f/1.8, my favourite sleeper lens, cheap, lovely wide open, just keep it at wider than f.2.8 and the bokeh is painting like
F43 f/1.9 hmm, I sometimes forget I have this, but when I put it on it never disappoints, the forgotten Limited?
A50 f/1.2 For me, Pentax's best 50 bar none, sorry and nobody will ever convince me otherwise

Anyone agree, disagree? Anyone want to steal my bag?
Ok, some seem to have taken this much too seriously (after all, if the scale is 1-10 and almost all average 8-10, the results cannot be taken seriously), but just for fun:

DA 15
DA 40
DA 55
FA 31 ltd
FA 43 ltd
FA 50 f1.4
FA 77 ltd
Tamron 90 f2.8
DA 16-45
Sigma 17-50 f2.8 (dropped the DA* 16-50 for this)
Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Sigma 50-150 f2.8 (dropped the DA* 50-135 for this)
Sigma 70-200 f2.8

Plus a couple that are not reviewed...

Of course, these do not all fit in my bag, but the average is 9.26. The only real changes I would consider would be to trade the Tamron 28-75 and Sigma 70-200 for the legendary Pentax FA* 28-70 f2.8 and 80-200 f2.8, which I have long lusted after.

For general shooting, the bag almost always has the 17-50 and 50-150 in it and lately I have been adding in the DA 55 1.4 for shallow DOF portrait shots.

When I see these lists, I am reminded that we Pentaxians have some fine and very unique glass to choose from that really is not matched by the other brands.

By far the best VSC from the above list is the FA 50 f1.4 that I picked up for $15 attached to a non-AF Pentax film camera that I found listed on Ebay by a Goodwill store. I think that equates to a single VSC of 59+!

For the five lenses I carry on a daily basis, my average is 9.49.

SMC Pentax-A 15mm F3.5 - 9.0
SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.2 - 9.43
SMC Pentax-A* 85mm F1.4 - 10.0
SMC Pentax-A* 135mm F1.8 - 9.20
SMC Pentax-A* 200mm - 9.83
I've just improved my rating a bit on my magic five to 9.526 by leaving my Mistress at home and taking out my Good Lady instead.

Mistress = SMC Pentax-A 15mm F3.5 - 9.0
Good Lady = SMC Pentax-A 20mm F2.8 - 9.17

While I don't have a standard "bag" I take with me all the time, if I was taking my InCase sling, it'd be:
  • DA 18-135: 8.45
    DA* 60-250 (when it gets back from CRIS): 9.70
    DA 15: 9.42
    FA 43: 9.52
    FA 77: 9.78
    D-FA 100 WR: 9.66

Which averages out to a 9.42...not too shabby! Now, if I could find an opportunity that would allow me to use all those lenses in one sitting, chances are I'd get a photo you'd rate at least a 9.42, right?!? Or maybe that's just how I rationalize the LBA...

On a more daily basis I would pack my small Lowepro w/ a DA 18-135 and FA 43, bringing my average down to 8.99 which is more in line w/ my keeper rate out of 10

portability-weighted average

Ok here we go...

Kiron 28 2.0 -- 9.00 (6 reviews)
FA 35 2.0 -- 9.10 (51 reviews)
M 50 1.4 -- 9.16 (71 reviews)

Thus the average is 9.09 ...
But unfortunately the rating of the Kiron is not as significant as the others, given the small number of reviews...

Let's introduce a portability-weighted average
defined as follows:

we call M the weight of the lens (I'll use grams, following strictly the SI units, but feel free to use what you like, we normalize in the end ), and r the average rating of the lens.
The smaller M, the more portable is the lens, thus we use as weighting factor 1/M, and consequently the sum over all 1/M's to normalize the final result.

W(Kiron) = 261 g (with lenshood)
W(FA 35) = 202 g (with lenshood)
W(M 50) = 241 g (with lenshood)

Thus A == r/W (Kiron) + r/W (FA35) + r/W (M50) = 0.1175.... rating-units/g
The normalizing factor is, B == 1/W (Kiron) + 1/W (FA35) + 1/W (M50) = 0.01293.... /g
And as final result we get A / B = 9.0865.... rating-units

Though this didn't change much for me, but for those of you trying to score high by adding you A* and FA* telephoto lenses :P :P....

What a neat question! This sounds like a "rainy day activity" for me. Whatever the rating turns out to be I'm sure it's much higher than what I'm capable of photographing!
