Lens and Composition Suggestions for Mount Kinabalu

I am planning a climb next month with my co-workers. Since this is one of those "team building" excercises and given that most of my co-workers, like me, sit in front of a computer 10hours a day, I think we will take the kitty trail, if there is such a thing. We will be climbing for one day only (not enough time to go to the top), and return to Sabah on the same day.

Given how I have been frustrated lately with my photos, I want to take this opportuninty to capture something that would ease my frustration for a while (not necessary unique).

What should be my lens and camear choices? (I presume K-5 for the WR, but perhaps K-01 is better due to its relatively light weight?)

FA* 24mm; DA* 50-135; FA31, FA43, FA77 ltd; DFA 100 WR; A50 1.7; Voigtlander 20; Voigtlander 58

Any suggestions on photos of moutains/landscape that I should study before the trip?

I would take the K5 as it is not really a heavy camera and you will be ready for whatever weather comes at you. I would probably be more concerned with wide angle and tele than normal focal lengths that way you can capture the expansive feel of being on the mountain as well as isolate certain features you find interesting.

As for what to study, I would say try to find out what the trail is like and what side of the mountain it is on. Then try to find when you will be at about what position on the mountain and try to judge where the sun and light will be. Look at photos of the actual mountain and try to visualize the sun hitting those spots and mentally prepare your shots. I have never been there, so I cannot give any personal experience. No matter what, I am sure you will have a great time and I hope we get to see some of your photographs of the trip. Good luck and have fun!

What a dream place to travel to, I just want to say that I'm jealous and want to wish you a great trip!
I see that you have both the 50-135 and the 100mm WR. Tough to choose between as both are light and very versatile in their own way. I can only guess that WR is good in that humidity and that leaves options pretty scarce in Pentax land, the 16-50.

Sorry, I did not notice the lens list before! Of the lenses listed I would not go without the 31 and the 50-135. Those are both excellent and the WR benefit of the DA* would be comforting. It would be nice to have something a little wider than 20mm, but if you do not have anything else I would suggest that go along as well.

Would it be better if I take both K-01 and K-5 with 20 and 50-135 attached, respectively? I am not sure how feasible it would be to change lens while climbing.

I am also debating whether to take a monopod as that is extra weight I would need to carry.

I would put the 20 or 31 on the K1 and the 50-135 on the K5. Bring the other prime in your bag if you wish. Enjoy.
