M39 to M42

what the drawbacks of using an M39 lens with an adapter?
do you lose image quality, infinity focus, etc?

Unless the adapter has optical element(s), you will not lose any IQ. However, you will definitely lose infinity focus since rangefinder's registration distance is much shorter than SLR's. I'm not aware of any adapter with corrected element (also degrades IQ), but that would be your best bet.

the M39 mount was also used on SLR cameras, like the early version of the Zenit-E, and others.
