Cool article dated 2002 on Pentax lenses

sm-02-05-02

Stumbled on this article after researching Pentax 31mm 1.8. I just bought the 77mm 1.8 limited and LOVE it, now I want the 31mm 1.8 limited.

I loved this article, hope you guys do too.

Thank you for sharing.

I have the FA31mm and it is a great lens. After reading the paper, I want the FA77mm... (LBA)

Nice, thanks for sharing. That's one of the reasons I joined Pentax last year; I felt like I was buying into a living legacy.

I'm a big fan of Mike Johnston's work in the Online Photographer. The article above is one of the reasons I stayed with Pentax when a went digital a few years ago. Attached is a link to one of his recent thoughts on the K5 and Pentax. Seems he remains a Pentax fan but like many of us laments a lack of lens choice from the firm.

I share Mike's pain. When I shot 35mm film, I used a 35mm lens as my "standard" A 24mm f2.4 ltd would be a great lens for me. I currently use a Sigma 24mm f2.8 to cover that, it makes a great light weight combo with the DA40mm XS

Great articles. My 31 is my favourite among my five Limiteds, but all are great photographic tools and get used a lot.

Honestly, I prefer the 77 to the 31 and the DA *55 to the 77, but they are all great lenses. I still don't understand why Pentax has never given these lenses the treatment they deserve with weather sealing and quick shift (aka the DFA 100mm WR macro). Just feels like they would be about perfect with such tweaks.

I have said before, but the thing I appreciate with Pentax lenses, is their rendering of out of focus areas and transitions from in focus to out of focus. Lenses like the Sigma 35mm f1.4 are sharper than the FA 31, but they don't have the same rendering and i prefer the FA limited as a result.

I have a 31mm and a 77. I definitely prefer the 31 both technically and focal-length-preference. I agree that they need WR and quick-shift... in fact I would probably 're-buy' both of them.

I love the limited lenses. Regarding the 31 mm. I wonder if those that have fallen in love with it (while using a crop sensor camera) will remain so if/when Pentax releases a FF body as it moves from standard to WA FOV.

An alternative is to use DA 18-135 at 24 mm FL. This is the sweet spot where the 18-135 is really good when stopped down to F5.6: sharp from center to edge (sharper than DA21 and FA31 according to the photozone numbers), has acceptable distortion and vignette. Only the aperture may not be wide enough for some occasions, but for landscape this is not an issue.

Yes, I have the 18-135 and it is my main outdoor lens now! But there are times when I like something a bit faster...
