Sigma lens(es): cleaning the lens exterior surface?

Hello to all.

I have recently acquired a Sigma 150-500 and there would be some light cleaning to do on the "outside" surface of the lens: the "almost rough" paint that is typical of Sigma lenses.

Has anyone come up with a cheap and quick way to clean that painted surface properly?

Thanks!!

JP

I have sprayed some LCD cleaning fluid in a thick lens cleaning cloth and wiped away and have yet to see any adverse effect.

If it's just on the outside surface of the lens you could just use regular water and a damp cleaning cloth as well. Just be careful to not get the cloth too wet so you don't get any water into the lens itself.

Be a bit careful though as you never know what's in the fluids and how the finish reacts to it. I tried it in a limited area a couple of times first. Though I wouldn't overdo it and use that method every time, only when needed, to limit the possible adverse effects.

I found that water just wasn't enough for some fatty surfaces and the LCD cleaner took care of them, but I agree that water is good when nothing stronger is needed.

I should have mentioned that I only use Sigma lenses so I was speaking from experience. I've cleaned spots off the outsides of my lenses with everything from water to spit. The Sigma's have the "flat black" surface that feels a bit rough but it cleans quite easily.

Oh, I forgot to mention spit and it works great most of the time.
