Pentax m*300 f4-HELP NEEDED

Hi everybody
monday i'lll go to argentina for one month.
i shoot primarily up to 100 mm and i'm not interested in birding. but in patGONIa there will be many animal species i'm interested and i think my sigma 105 could be short.

my gear

pentax 16-50 2,8
sigma 10-20
sigma 105
pentax 501,7

i have found a used m*300 f4 in ashop. it could be very good to take with me for this trip in case i need the long reach or for candid in buenos aires.
How is the lens? Any experience?
they have asked me 490 euro. it seems a bit too hig and i'll try to put it down, but they are hard to convince ( italian shopper are closing one after the other, they have so stupid price...for example pne has a hassy xpan at 3000 euro!!! who in the earth will pay this price!!!)
in the near future i have planned to buy the da 200 and 300 and a tele zoom ( the sigma 100-300 or the pentax 65-250) and so i'd use this lens only in this trip and then try to resell it. i have fear i'l llo lost a lot of money try to reselling it but at the same time i know that in patagonia i'll swear myself not having bought it?

thanks.

I can't speak about the M300, I have the SMC 300F4, and I use it quite a bit with the pentax 1.7x AF TC this gives me 500mm F6.7 (approximately)

For you, 300 will be a good start, but it is difficult to get close and I found that except for herons and other large birds, 300 is a little too short. YOu may also want to get a quality TC.

I also use this with a flash on my *istD, and this is one limitation of pentax DSLRs after the *istDS, specifically that they are not TTL capable, and as a result you are limited in terms of use of flash with K mount lenses.

by the way, I don't see what camera you are using. This is important, as I have found the K10 to be a little different in terms of metering. You will see lots of threads discussing the behavior, but I recommend that you carefully check the histogram on your first shot to see how it behaves

The price indeed seems high, but I could never figure out europeen pricing anyway.

I saw a 300F4 (not M version) disappear from a shop window a few weeks ago. I check this shop fairly regularly because they have had some good finds from time to time, and they still have some used pentax lenses. It was tagged at $500 cdn. Don't know if it went for the marked price or not, but that is about 350 euros. This lens, at least externally, had seen better times.

You could check on the market place, and look at typical selling price, and also at the database to see what is indicated for the 300 F4 as a price paid.

The problem I expect is that when the new lenses are released, this will do one of two things, either the old lens prices will fall, because the market will disappear, or the price will rise even higher because people think the old lenses are under-valued compared to the price of the new ones. If you can figure out the market, your better than I am.

In fact, there is one M*300 selling right now at the marketplace. After shipping, it would still be plenty cheaper than the 490 euros.

looks about same condition as the SMC 300 F4 I saw go a few weeks ago. This is a lighter version than the origonal 300F4.

I guess the price I saw was about right.

looking at the condition i have to say that the one i see in the shop is far far better than this, mre near the a version showed in the photo.
clearly 490 is their starting price, hen there is the fight for the price and i hope to put it more near 400 han 500))
i think at this point with my rip monday i have no reason to risk. i'll buy it and hen resell it after the trip or keep it in case. maybe i could lose 100 euro bu maybe this lens will let me know a single photo that i resell for 100000000 euro..who knows)))

P.s: very funny when i was checkin by phone the shop, i called wrongly another that has only a fa 85 1.4 used...they said me 450...i couldn't believe it and i said them i'll buy it in april, when they'll receive it.
