Was he telling the truth

eBay: PENTEX SMCP-67 600MM F4 LENS (item 280066687968 end time Jan-08-07 07:33:36 PST)

"THIS LENS IS LIKE NEW. USED VERY LITTLE AND HARD TO FIND. RIGHT NOW THEY SELL NEW FOR OVER $4000. IT IS F/4 WITH 6 ELEMENTS IN 5 GROUPS. FILTER SIZE IS 77MM."

Did this buyer get a good deal? Just curious. No I did not bid or win

What about this one eBay: Pentex Asahi Takumar 500mm Lens Nikon Adapter (item 180070679507 end time Jan-09-07 17:41:17 PST)

It looks like it was dragged throught the streets. Hope I don't give away my ebay secrets with these posts.

These are exotic pieces of glass, but some things should be kept in mind. They were metal frames and tubes-very sturdy. At this focal length, production numbers were very small, so a hands-on inspection was very likely. This would confirm both function and performance.

But they are old! Coatings are yesterdays/years technology and they have been exposed to the elements.

The first looks better cared-for; but that may simply mean it has sat in a closet for years. The second is well used-clearly-but it may be a stellar performer?!?!?!

And so I come full circle-they are exotic focal lengths requiring special shooting techniques, exceptional lighting and the right touch from the photographer. And probably a stout assistant to lug the thing about for any distance. I suspect that is the major factor in the excellent appearance of the first unit.

pat, i think he had to be wrong about the filter size. my tak500f4.5 takes like a 112mm filter. a 600f4 would have to be as big or bigger.

second item is probably correct. there is one here in town with a nikon mount. i just wish i could find some more mounts for mine.

He wasn't wrong about that part, at least: https://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/showproduct.php?product=156&cat=37

Pentax.ca has lots of info on "historical" products, BTW
