an unexpected bargain

I was seeking a sharper option to the kit lens with a few parameters in mind - and FF abilities were not among them! So I lost a few bids on DA16-45, priced out a few 17-50mm lenses, and saw that $250-300 was a reasonable expectation for such a lens. Then I encountered a deal on the Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4, a copy of which I owned in my Alpha A200 days and really liked. Hmm, by stopping at 35mm the DA40 remains in play, that's nice. Price shipped under $200: very nice. And oh yeah: full frame ready! Though I swear a FF digital is not on my personal horizon, once again I find a great FF lens that's deserving of time in front of a smaller sensor.

For price, speed and talent it's a great lens and a nice fit in today's kit. For the future, who's to say?
Now to blow all the savings on a few 77mm filters..

Here's an oldie but goodie at 35mm

I generally don't like variable-aperture zooms, but this result looks very nice. Good find!

Yes, this was the early days of vari-ap zooms when it wasn't just a cost-saving compromise. Some very good lenses came through in the earlier days, but so did my Rikenon 70-150 f/4; sure wish a modernized copy of this were available somewhere, as the f/2.8 copies are so very much larger.

17mm at f/2.8

17mm at f/2.8
Very nice at both ends of the range, I see!
