AFAIK, mine's a Komine (Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4, 62mm filter size, s/n 28******), but there's no A aperture setting but "P", 16, 11, 8, 5.6, 4, 2.8.
In which case its a Ricoh mount so make sure the extra pin has been removed on the mount otherwise there is a chance it will jam onto your body.
They are a pig to remove then.

The dreaded Ricoh-mount! I had no idea, thanks for telling me. It seems I can get the lens on and off quite nicely ATM. I wonder if it could get stuck later and if I should try lens surgery like explained here?

Wasn't such a big operation after all. And even the patient seemed to survive. However, it didn't go quite like in that link as the back of the lens didn't come off completely as there was some kind of a spring holding it. Managed to get the pin out anyway.

What you see is normal.

I sold my Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f/2.8-4.0 with A from Komine a month ago. You got the one among the first three recommended versions of series 1 by Mark Roberts. Among the first three versions, only the latter Komine copies in version 3 have the 'A' setting.

I sum my experience on the Vivitar Series 1 first three versions in my blog. It is a very capable manual lens and I recently replaced it with Tamron SP 70-210mm f/3.5 adaptall-2 19AH. The close up in 1:2.5 in the Komine is better when I tried both the Vivitar 1 and the Tamron 19AH, the tamron has some glowing and ghosting in macro that I have not figured out yet.

And I used the Komine Series 1 successfully with Pentax F-1.7x AF TC before to turn the 70-210mm into 149mm-357mm with partial AF. You need to register the SR focal length with 1.7x factor. I always choose a lower value in the SR focal length for the setting. I have test photos in my flickr for the lens on close up as well as tele shots in the zoo with Pentax F-1.7x TC on the zoom.

Thanks,
Hin

I would suggest NOT to do anything if your lens doesn't get stuck and that you don't see the pin in the lens' rear. Not all Ricoh compatible lens has a pin that is non-retracting. If you do find the pin and that it actually retracts, you should be safe. You can only concern if find the pin that is the non-retracting type.

I hope you take cautions in your decision on alternation. At the minimal, I suggest you take a close up shot on the lens rear and post it here for others to comment.

VS1 70-210 Lenses With/Without A Setting

There have been some mentions of various older VS1 lenses having or not having (or only some having) an A setting and contacts (i.e., Ka functionality) in this thread. However, only in V.3 is that ever "up in the air". V.1 and V.2 never have an A setting. V.4 and later always have an A setting. Only V.3 is questionable, in that the manufacturing run of this lens overlapped the introduction of the Super Program and the Ka lens format, so that older V.3's lack an A setting and newer ones have it.

Is there a safe lubricant one could apply oneself without messing the lens up totally? And where should it be applied? My item seems mechanically fine otherwise but the zooming is a bit sticky requiring some force.
