Pentax DA21 Vs. Pentax F28

Does anyone have experience comparing both these lenses first hand? Other than the obvious focal length? The F28 has a better user review at 9.39 vs 9.17 for the DA 21. The average price of the F28 is also less than half that of the DA21.

All I can say is that you're looking at a fairly significant difference in field of view between the two, so I'd start by seeing which lens best fits your needs, and then examining the sub-scores found in their respective reviews.

I've had both. The 28 shoots "normal" - ish.

Color and sharpness are great.

DA21 is my favorite lens, it's a wide FL, and I wish it was a touch faster aperture

The two don't compare, but Pentax could offer a DA ltd version of F28 2.8 and I'd buy it. (metal construction, built in hood, quickshift, even a stupid metal cap ;D )

Get both

I had the chance to try the DA21 (I met with the seller) and took my F28 to compare. I honestly coud not justifiy buying it though it was certainly more attractive..
smaller, Quick-shift, bit faster focusing (I think) DoF markings correspond to the f-stops.. I think the F28 is a tad sharper wide open but both are great for sure

Is the DA 21 worth $250 more than the F28? Because that's what I'm looking at. I just need a lens that I can use for landscape and wider shots overall. My current lens is the FA 43.

I'm ready to plunk down $225 for the F28

feature..........................DA 21........................F28
Built in Hood.....................X...............................-......
Quick Shift........................X...............................-......
Full Metal Const...............X................................-......
Digital coatings.................X................................-.....

Depends on what you value I guess.

I used an old 49mm screw on metal hood for "normal" lens on the F28 - it was servicable, but not as compact and attractive as the DA 21. I just recently sold my F28 f2.8 because I have too much glass that sits - the 28 stayed in my sock drawer, the 21 is glued to my Kr.... I picked up the 21 Used here on the forum... you cant buy a F28 new...

I still maintain to buy both.. and that if they offered a DA Ltd version of the F 28 I'd snap it up.

Ok, I agree with you there. The F28 is one butt ugly lens. And honestly who wants people pointing and staring at your butt ugly lens. Come to think of it they point and stare at me regardless......but I digress.

Ok.....you are convincing me towards the DA 21.

there are a few B&W film shots on the later shot on a K1000. The one thing I must reiterate, the focal lengths are completely different on APS-C. In the same way as your 43 becomes short telephoto on Crop, so the F 28 becomes normal....

OMG the F series is simply classic design! How can you say something like that.

To answer your question, I have both and I like both. But they are very different lenses. 21mm and 28mm may not seem far apart numerically but the difference is quite large. You need to decide what focal length you need. For me 28mm is a great 'normalish' lens but not what I use for landscape.

I'm more inclined towards the DA21 regarding your photographs. Very nice collection.

What percentage do you use the DA 21 compared to the DA 15?

I shoot it 2:1 at least... I find 15 so much wider that its hard to keep an uncluttered frame - I am still learning it though and I'm made some OK shots that keep me coming back to try it some more. I also have DA 12-24 which I should revisit as I've only been shooting since Jan 2011 - I feel I've learned a lot the last little while. Of course, I'm not retired, and my kids still live at home so my spare time is a precious commodity.
