You could get a D FA 100 macro and a DA*300 for the price of a DA*60-250. That's what I would recommend.

I am in fact a prime kind of guy, however I've found at the telephoto end of things I am actually more drawn to a zoom,
Makes sense to me.

Seems like a purposeful engineering decision by Pentax. The further away it is, the further you want the lens to be able to reach for it?
I believe indeed that this was an accepted compromise when designing the lens.

That's only true if you pay list price. I paid less than 1200$ last fall for my 60-250.

Not so when I'm dealing on the forum marketplace. It's about 50% more.

Just made a purchase of a DA60-250. Thanks for all the helpful perspectives.

I know this is an old thread, but what are your impressions of the 60-250mm so far?
I'm thinking about picking one up myself.
Thanks!

I will venture an answer. You will see from my signature that I have a decent list of well-regarded lenses. The 60-250 is still my favourite in that list. It's a fantastic range of focal length, not too big (I just handheld it for an entire college football game without problem). I invite you to read the review I wrote here for PentaxForums:
