It has the serial number on front.
So I have the earlier version. How different are these both versions optically? According to some users, later version is better however Yoshihiko Takinami prefers older one so there is no consensus.

I notice that there isn't a consistent complaint about a specific issue with the M28/2.8. People just find a lens they like better. On APS-C, the 28mm might be a normal lens, on the camera a lot and called on to shoot anything. So any improvement is magnified on a DSLR.
I really like the F version, not a Yoshihiko Takinami favorite. I have tested it against others and it always comes out on top, but I would probably like it if it was only OK. I get autofocus, don't have to enter focal length, works with popup flash, very small even with a hood, etc. It is reliable enough so I can concentrate on taking better shots at 28mm, which is not my best focal length.
