SMC M28 f2.8 versions

There seems to be two versions of SMC M28 f2.8. Is there a way to identify which version of lens it is by looking at it (may be the serial number). I just bought a M28/f2.8 and wondering if it's an earlier or 2nd version.

Thanks
Yusuf

Check the lens reviews.

Yes, it's easy to tell them apart: the mark 1 version has a silver edge to the front of the focusing ring, the mark 2 is just plain black plastic. So, as long as you have a view of the front of the lens, you should be able to figure out which version.

Easier than that: if the front of the lens has the serial number on it, it's version 1. The version 2 lenses have a serial number close to the aperture ring.

I was expecting you to answer Dave - thanks It has the serial number on front.

So I have the earlier version. How different are these both versions optically? According to some users, later version is better however Yoshihiko Takinami prefers older one so there is no consensus.

I notice that there isn't a consistent complaint about a specific issue with the M28/2.8. People just find a lens they like better. On APS-C, the 28mm might be a normal lens, on the camera a lot and called on to shoot anything. So any improvement is magnified on a DSLR.

I really like the F version, not a Yoshihiko Takinami favorite. I have tested it against others and it always comes out on top, but I would probably like it if it was only OK. I get autofocus, don't have to enter focal length, works with popup flash, very small even with a hood, etc. It is reliable enough so I can concentrate on taking better shots at 28mm, which is not my best focal length.
