9025140 ordered from B&H seems good so far.

I work all day, and with daylight hours getting shorter it's very hard for me to do some tests in good light. I've run the lens through its paces with indoor lighting and I haven't found anything glaring about it yet.

It either has back or front focus, coupling with the very noticeable softness at wide open.
Are these the only problems? If so, mine seems good. I used Home and all seems fine. Should any other tests be done?

S/N 9029841, bought at the Cleveland Dodd camera store.

9024280 - a lemon....bad copy. Center was very soft, edges ok. Strong CA too. Returned and exchanged for lens below

9024051 - better than good. Center VERY sharp, edges impressive, CA improved.

This is a bad one, purchased online Nov 30, 2008 from Sixth Avenue Electronics. Retuned for a refund with no problem.

Serial 9019218 purchased from Adorama on 4/28/08.

After extensive testing and questions on the forum, I found this lens to be a good copy.
After several months of use I noticed that *some* pics seemed to have excessive softening on the right side of the frame. This varied in degree of softening, but some got so bad that subjects on the right side of the frame appeared out of focus compared to the left side. Lens sent to Pentax, and was replaced. New serial 9015155.

It better not be a refurb! Seems stupid that they would refurb another lens to send to me instead of just repairing mine...

Testing to be done later...

Serial 9030331: GOOD

I did wait a little bit before replaying to this thread because I'm not an expert in lens testing and charts bore me. So I waited to take a lot of pictures, about 800 since I have the lens. I didn't notice any major issue with it.

Here are some observations (on my K20D):
- It's slightly better than my 12-24 at the same aperture/focal length
- At f/2.8 it's not impressive on the borders, fortunately since the Photozone test, I now know it's not a defective copy but rather a defective design.
- At 50mm, at a few meters, it doesn't match the FA50 at f/2.8 (but the FA50 has a longer actual FL), again borders not impressive.
- By f/5.6 it's very sharp
- Focusing is fast but can hunt in some conditions (low-light and contra-light)
- Resistance to flare is ok but nothing exceptional
- Zoom mechanism is not as smooth as say the 50-135. There is a strange friction at about 28mm, but at least the lens is not prone to zoom creep.

I bought it from Prodigital2000 in october. I had to wait more than one month to get the promised free UV filter (and had to write numerous e-mails).

Hi ManuH, I also noticed that the DA16-50/2.8 is sharper across the frame than the DA12-24/4 when comparing at the same focal length and aperture. I was rather surprised by this and I was wondering if I conduct my shots correct. Thank you for the confirmation. The DA12-24/4 is known for mild distortion and sharpness across the frame and it was a pleasant surprise to see the DA16-50/2.8 doing this well at the wide-end. Althought the DA16-50/2.8 does have it's fault, i.e. distortion at 16mm, decrease sharpness at 50mm, it rarely leaves my camera. I really fell in love with the contrasty images and the solid build quality. Needless to say I am very happy with it and one of the main reason why I am still using Pentax. Oh and its serial number is 9019655.

9027330 seems to be a lucky number! After 4-500 pictures I can conclude that it is strangely sharp at both 16 and 50mm wide open. I expected it to be really bad. Even corners are OK. Looking at the pictures at 100% I am not impressed comparing with my primes...
but looking at the pictures, without magnification, just let them filling up my 24 inch screen... it's another story.... must be the contrast that say to your eye that this is reealy sharp..

Only thing is that the tube/barrel feels a little bit loose...not solid.. but hey, the lens really give me great pictures.

After a couple of hundred (or maybe more) photos at various apertures, focal lengths etc etc, I think that 9016330 is OK.

Can't help thinking that I am beginning to look TOO closely at the results though

Received 9013471 as a replacement from Pentax (first copy did not focus, faulty SDM). And it seems to be really good. Lots of detail just like my 50-135.

Too bad I had to send the original copy back to Pentax for service, and wait a month to get it back after shelling out my hard earned money.

S/N 9025929 - Won't Manual Focus

Bought this from Willoughby's through Amazon. I fitted it to my brand new K20D, and the SDM worked AMAZING! I put it on C-AF, and it was like it knew where I wanted to focus before I did.

But, when I switched over to MF (the way the manuals say), it wouldn't focus at all. Then I noticed that I couldn't "touch up" in AF.

I've called Willoughby's, and they are going to exchange it for me with no problems. Can't wait for the new one. This is my first professional lens, and I am dieing to use it!
