esman7,
I can't honestly tell if you got a good copy or not, with those tiny photographs. However the vignetting doesn't look too bad, at 16mm for any wide angle zoom lens.
I honestly like the effect that you have on your first image.

Bought it one year ago at amazon.
Backfocused on the K10D (corrected in Debug), spot-on on the K-x. (as are all my other lenses).
When corrected, very sharp, good rendering, no SDM issues.
Have never really checked for distortion or corner softness, as it is not a major concern for me.

It really does come up at the extreme end and I was concerned until...

Is vignetting usually then an inherent characteristic of wide angle lenses (at their widest end)?

(Thank you for the links asdf)

Take a look at tests of Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 or other fast zooms. It's a much liked lens and it behaves similarly at f/2.8.

Phew, thanks for putting that one up because I was worried I would have to get the Tamron instead.

I still read people receiving low numbers. How odd.
Received my 9026xxx in august 2007.
It worked fine until 2.5 weeks ago (dec 20th) my zoomring got stuck....
Need that lens again i fenruary so knowinig how stores and the new Pneatx service works I decided to get me a new one, repair probably costly.

Then after some, no, a lot of shipping mishaps, I recieved the lens on monday after Christmas. This one being a 9029xxx (forgot number).
At last I am a true Pnetaxian, AF did not work.
Sent back an no replacement yet....
Full rant here....

While it miht have been a bit more expensive (well, it was on sale so maybe not), this is why I got my DA* 50-135 from a local retailer. I was able to test and inspect the lens before I signed for it and I could return it if it was defective.

Pentax 16-50mm, Failed SDM motor - Repaired

Serial #9030726

SDM motor failed.

Sent to Chandler, AZ repair facility on Dec. 22. Received repaired lens on January 8th - they replaced the motor under warranty. Pretty quick turnaround - and lens looked well cared for.

Now praying that the motor doesn't fail after warranty is up.

Plan to exercise it every day and not let it sit too long.

Fourth digit still important who knows why

Hi everybody,

More Bayes nets with updated list of S/N (as of 17Jan2010): there is still a 65% random chance to get a good copy, and 90% if the fourth digit is 0, 1 or 2. The digit to check is the X as in 902X306. So if you have the possibility, you could improve your odds by asking for a fourth digit <= 2 !

EDIT: actually, if 4th digit = 0, chance of a good copy is 90%, if it is =1, chance is 100% (!), if it is =2, chance is 77%.

Cheers,
Grégoire
PS: sorry for you mdsnexp, you had a 10% chance of getting a lemon...

SDM failed

Ok, after 7,5 months, my 16-50 has stopped focussing. The SDM doesn't do anything anymore.

Serial number: 9023606

Bought it the 28th of may 2009 in the Netherlands. Bringing it back for warranty this afternoon.

[edit]
I just signed the petition. By the way, my 16-50 broke down quite gradually. At first the focussing got slower, then it got even slower with more hunting (sometimes not focussing at all), and in the end the SDM didn't do anything anymore. My other two SDM lenses (see sign.) work perfectly.

Sorry to hear that Mous. Many of us feel your pain. About all you can do is send it in under warranty, and sign the petition:

9031008

So far no problems with s/n#9031008. I bought this lens via Amazon in Nov, 2009.

I have used it lightly, ~200-300 shots. I am very happy with it's optical and focusing performance.

After finding this web site recently and this thread today, I'm getting nervious about it and the DA*50-135mm lens I ordered this week.

#9026888 has focussing problems at 50mm end of zoom - have to manually focus or bring back in a bit. About to return under 2 yr warranty as 1 year and 1 month after purchase. Purchased from Digital Depot UK in Dec 08 (replaced my previous delivered faulty one, don't know serial no., but had serious CA problems)... no SDM issues on this or my 50-135 DA* so far....
