Looking for advice guys,

I could really use something in the 16~50 range. I'm seriously looking at the DA*16-50/2.8 but this thread scares the hell out of me. Is this lens worth taking a chance on?

Tom G
well... this lens is really bad.

I mean, i went to 3 stores, i tested 5 lens in total, only 1 were o.k, not good, but o.k. I bought mine before testing it. I tested at home, and i had to sent it back to pentax canada, for repair. After repair it was okay, but for how long...

I should have bought the Pentax 16-45 f4, or a Sigma 17-70 f2.8 instead.

The 16-50mm is a kind of lens that you won't be able to resell easily because of all of those problem...

serial numbers

The answer on serial numbers is I'm afraid not clear. There appear to have been more QC issues with earlier lenses relating to de-centering and jammed zoom rings, but SDM seems to have a fundamental design weakness - perhaps the micro-motor, perhaps some part of it.

It is a design flaw - for all the occasional reports of SDM/USM failures in other brands, I have seen nothing like the number of problems we have seen reported for the 2 first DA* zooms.

It is very irritating, and Pentax have chosen for their own reasons not to acknowledge the flaw.

For all that, they are both excellent optically once you get a good copy, in ways that do not always show up in tests. It isn't clear why Pentax can't offer a firmware upgrade to allow the use of in-body motors when SDM fails so that we at least have the choice to decide whether it is worth going to the expense of having SDM repaired (only to see it fail again?). Perhaps it is technically impossible, perhaps they simply don't want to say anything that admits there's a problem - who knows?

Just to add to the pile.

My 16-50 had been bulletproof until this past Friday. Doing a shoot and we decided to go to the guy's brand new truck to review the first batch of shots on my Macbook. Put the camera + 16-50 very gently onto the dash (it's a new truck, remember) and record the shots. When I removed the camera from the dash, the zoom ring was jammed.

Took it back to my car to exchange lenses and when I took the lens off, the zoom ring began to move normally again. Been fine since.

And to think I sold a 16-45 to buy it. Fortunately I have other lenses to use, but to spend this sort of dollars to get such a fragile lens is unconscionable.

No problems here

#9030406 has been a great lens so far! Came from either B&H or Amazon, I can't remember which.

SDM Working again!

I'd checked and cleaned everything I could think of.

But on examining the contacts on the back of my DA*50-135 and the DA*16-50 I realised one of the gold contact pins that passes SDM info had been completely bent back. Using a pair of tweezers I have managed to push it back into place, and eureka, I have a fully functional lens again.

But how that pin got bent completely back is a mystery to me.

Anyway, apologies for having inadvertently added to the SDM gloom.

I have never been happy with my 16-50 mm zoom, but I am certainly not a zoom-man, if this might existÖ
Since I have my three limitedís (15, 21, 35 mm) I never touched that zoom-thing again. Itís rather good at 50 mm but is a bottom of a coke bottle at 16 mm!
I had it adjusted and tuned on the camera body by the official Belgian Pentax service centre, it came back a little better, within the factory limits as they say.
This was the first, and last, zoom I ever bought, after 30 years of photography, I learned my lesson now.

Good luck with yours,

Serial 9033462 from B&H a dud - BF issues. A replacement is on the way but, honestly, I am second-guessing myself on the purchase. I wish I had purchased my other choice, the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 at 1/2 the cost. Perhaps I will if the 2nd lens is crap, too.

The one I got from B&H had severe FF and bad decentering (talked to cs on the phone that dumb ass didn't even know what I was talking about. He even said B&H has sold hundreds of those craps with almost zero complaint. bull shit!). The lens focus adjustment really didn't help at all. Screw that crap. mrpetkus let us know if they send you the good one this time if not just get Tamron man, you won't regret it and most likely you won't get a heart attack!

Received my replacement today - based on some preliminary shoots of random things and a focus chart it appears to be tack sharp. Going to bring it on a shoot this evening. Time will tell.

Good serial 9042354

9031745 - was performing ok but now...

Did any of you had a moment when the AF wasn't working? I mean AF is on and you point the camera at something, press the shutter halfway and nothing happens. That's not true. The little hexagon is flashing.

I was on an offroad motorcycle event and ever since i have a feeling that the zoom ring has a spot where it is a bit harder to rotate. Do you have this also or it's just me who thinks things into a normal phenomena.

Thx,
A

My 9023606 just returned from warranty service. The SDM had quit on me. It's working perfectly again. Purchased in NL and fixed in BE. Let's just hope it stays this way and none of my other SDM lenses break (I have two more; 55mm and 50-135mm, both out of warranty).
