S/N 9029891 purchased online from B&H last week is my second and this one is going back also. Not as bad as the first but a very poor image everywhere but the center, especially at f16. I may try a third but this is all very disconcerting.

S/N 9029707 bought from KEH last week.
Brick wall test: not as impressive as I'd hoped.
Significant vignetting and barrel distortion at 16mm, even more than 16-45 lens, but sharpness acceptable throughout.

More tests to follow...

After some fairly rigorous tests, I can say that lens: SN 9032916 is in perfect working order on my K20d. I got a good one on the first shot! It's a truly fabulous short zoom, and fun to use. No regrets on getting this one!

SN 9029429 is good optically, but the zoom ring gets much tighter from 28-50. Is this common? It bugs me and I'm considering sending it to Pentax when I can be without it for a while.
It was bought from Amazon 7/08

I took the lens and body with me to work at sea last time and for 3 months it was on the cam 75% of the time. I bounced it from Lisbon, all around Italy, past Gibraltor twice, then to Brussels, Rotterdam, Amsterdam....that kit has been hot, cold, fogged, hot and wet, cold and wet, rained on, snowed on...I had ice form on the edges of the filter during Nov in Rotterdam.
Great stuff. The lens looks new, the body has a few scuffs and I've absolutely no prob's with either yet.

Yes, this is normal from what I've read. It's because there are two zoom barrels, and the second is engaged around 28mm

9019346 from Willoughby's appears to be good. I tested the lens with the focus test chart, newspaper, and flowers.
looks like yours is the exact SN another member has reported as "bad"...

Okay, thanks for that. I was starting to think it must be by design, but hadn't seen it mentioned by anyone else yet.

cheers

S/N 9029255 purchased 2/09 from Adorama. BAD.

Decentering right, which looks downright appalling by 36-50mm when it adds ghosting to the left side's blurring and yellow-blue CA. Front focuses at all focal lengths except 16mm and 50mm, which means it's not correctable in-camera.

Sending it in to Pentax rather than gamble on store replacement. Will post an update after servicing.

On the bright side, it's clearly worth the initial hassle. The AF locks in fast and without hunting, the 16mm test shots promise that a properly calibrated version of this lens can deliver spectacularly, and the SDM really is practically silent. The mirror slap is jarringly loud by comparison.

9011857- Defective

Purchased December 2007 from Beach Camera. Replaced under warranty by Pentax.

9012375, the replacement, is a very good copy.
