FA35 Bokeh

i've heard that some people have complaints with the FA35 with regards to bokeh... what exactly is the problem? i'm new at this game, but the sample images that i've seen look good to my untrained eye, ... this lens is also frighteningly sharp

Bokeh is a very subjective matter. However, to really test bokeh, you should have taken it with a much more busy background and much further from the object to see how creamy the lens can render it. If you ask me, the diamonds on that ring might have highlighted edges, which are not really desirable.

Bokeh is not only the back OOF area, but also the front OOF. The IOF and OOF transition is also important.

It would be best to compare the Bokeh to that of another lens (exact same scene).
Only then one can say with confidence that a Bokeh is "good".

The highlights around the diamond ring in the bokeh are common with pentax lenses on k10d. This is less of a case in k20d shots.

This is one of the reason I have been quite happy with the new camera. DFA 100mm macro is now a lens I start to pick up using again since it is most notorious with blown highlights in the bokeh

are those highlights on the ring not good? i thought they were kind of cool to be honest
is it that the CMOS sensor on the k20d reacts differently than a CCD?

That's what aegisphan means. Bokeh is a subjective matter.

I have the Fa 35 and it does have a slightly harsh bokeh, it's not "BAD" but no where as nice as say the 31mm ltd, but I would hope it wouldn't be as nice.

I kind of like it when I see blown highlights in the bokeh and "harsh bokeh" with accentuated edges. However, my view changed over time. This was a mainstream kind of thing where a lot of people regard harsh bokeh as bad bokeh.

It seems that smooth creamy bokeh with almost "oozing out" kind of quality appeals the most to most people. "white dots or lines" in the bokeh are usually regarded distracting. Since majority of lenses could produce that invariably, any lenses that do not render bokeh that way are more considered as gems ...

As long as you like it, who cares about what the others think?
