Insane move on lens pricing by Pentax

Pentax has again announced increases in lens pricing. As I have said elsewhere - Insanity is not a defense in Bankruptcy Court.

By the time I'm ready to buy the FA 77, it's going to cost over $2000 probably.

They didn't raise the price on the FA 31 Limited. That must mean it's discontinued...

Just bringing US prices into line with other markets?

For example, the DA 17-70 is EUE 549 in Germany with 19% tax
Pentax Objektive
which translates to a tad over USD 600
without tax at today's exchange rate,
so about the same as the new "insane" US price.

+ 20% to 50% is too much ... what's the strategy behind this and will the remaining lenses increase in price as well ?! J

I guess they'll probably have semi-annual rebates going forward. Otherwise the market will respond by not buying the lenses or moving systems. Lenses are just expensive overall though, so where would we go? Prices are way too high on some of these though. They have to look at the competition. Nikon and Canon both charge less for their 50/1.4s, which have built in motors.

JC Penney recently confirmed that the US market responds to a "Mark up to mark down" strategy.

Oh god no, they're planning on only selling the new price hiked lenses. Leaving these, and the DA* lineup! Pentax just discontinued about 8 lenses then...

It's like Diamonds. People want them because they can't have them.(This was a South Park episode scheme, also)

What the heck, man? These are some really major price hikes (OK - the 55-300mm one isn't so bad). I thought that Pentax was trying to gain market share, not lose it. The execs over at Sigma and Tamron must be dancing with joy right now, this is a direct increase in sales of their lenses to Pentax owners.

This makes it easy for someone like me who is waiting for Pentax FF to just sell everything and move to Nikon..

It is insane only if you assume that Ricoh is running Pentax like a typical business. To me Ricoh operates Pentax as a sort of hobby. More whimsy than sound strategy. I don't think "market share" is an operating requirement.
