How about Yashinon lenses?

I searched the forum for examples of M42 Yashinon lenses but they seem to be in disgrace.... Not that there are no examples, but in comparison to other legacy lenses, Yashinons seem to be very underrated. Any idea why?

I only have one Yashinon, but I like it a lot. It's the Auto Yashinon-DX 50mm F1.7, and it delivers great photos, both normal, as well as mounted on a 25mm extension tube...

Rense - what can you tell us about this lens? How many blades, for example?

I can't find much information on the web. My version - probably there is only one DX-version of this lens? - has only six, slightly rounded blades.
Aperture f/1.7-f/16, very nice light feel and great sharp, but silent clicks. Very smooth focussing, from about 0.5m-infinity. Single coated? although I'm not sure about that.

Absolutely no idea about the lens formula, probably somebody else can help?

I believe the Yashinon lenses were made by Tomioka,
which was eventually acquired by Yashica,
a few years before the collaboration with Zeiss
on the Contax/Yashica bayonet mount.

So you may get more luck searching for "Tomioka."

There's additional general information in the Yashica sites including the TLR's.

Yashinon

Your photos are fantastic Rense. The dreamy dandelion is superb.

I have the exact same lens, again, don't know much about its construction, but its pretty sharp. Excuse the pics, they were taken when I first started in photography, almost a year ago.

Yashica MLs are best but they are Y/C mount. I have few converted 135/2.8, 50/1.7.For the M42, DXs are better than DSs.

I have an old Yashinon 50mm lens that used to do a really good job on film. As in the photos above, it rendered very 'soft' colors. Sorry...I can't post the exact model of lens because we're in the middle of a renovation job and my photography gear is scattered everywhere. lol

I think the DS-Ms are fantastic -- better than the DXs, although those are very good too. The DX 50s have protruding rear elements that will hit the mirror on some cameras (and won't even fit in the K-01). Forget about those if full-frame comes along (and it has a mirror).

But in general, I love the Yashinons.

How about on a K-5/II/IIs? I saw a good copy of a Yashinon 50 (i forget which line) at a nearby thrift store, but noticed and was concerned by how much it protrudes past the mount (it was a M42 mount). Thanks.

i have only one that fits pentax natively (m42), yashinon tomioka 55mm f1.2, and few other in C/Y mount.
The 55/1.2 has different rending than pentax K/A 50/1.2, and ok sharpness wide open - not the sharpest, not the best colors, but good enough for my uses.

The other yashica lenses in C/Y mount, both ML and DSB, are on pair with pentax lenses.
They all fit on 5dm2 with adapter with no mirror issues.
The cheapest is 50/2 and 50/1.9, each is about 10-15usd, quality wise very alike pentax M/A 50/2,
may be a bit better than pentax at f2.0, but pentax 50/1.7 is hard to beat.
Carl zeiss also made lenses in C/Y mount, but yashica lenses are not even close. Zeiss lenses are in different class.

I also compared (some of) yashica lenses with carl zeiss jena lenses (m42 and P6) -
Flektogon 50/4, Flektogon 25/4, Flektogon 20/2.8 -
The color output from the Flektogons are richer than yashica lenses.
The sharpness are better, but here you have to look for it, very close in sharpness.
These CZJ are older lenses than the Yashica, but also slower and more expensive.

While pentax lenses need to remove the pin to use with canon FF, the yashinon 55/1.2 fits with m42 adapter directly on both pentax and canon.
It's also the fastest m42, tomioka made, also exist as other brands, same design/maker.

Yeah, the DX 50/1.4 and 50/1.7 protrude quite a bit at infinity. But I've used them both on the K10D and K-7 and K-5 with no issue. I have heard of a few incidents involving the K20D of the mirror just hitting the back of the lens. This is a question of less than a millimeter, so even individual bodies could vary. They will not work on the K-01 as I said, and any full-frame with a big mirror would probably be hopeless.

One solution is just don't focus on far subjects, or even use an m42 adapter with a flange that will increase the distance, remove infinity focus anyway, and give you even greater close focusing ability.
