I owned Tamron 17-50 f2.8, and sold it because of inconsistent focus performance. Now I have DA 16-45, and it focuses much better - more reliable and accurate. But, the image quality goes to Tamron side. It is simply superior lens to the DA 16-45. If you can find Tamron that has accurate focus, go for it.

It seems that the Pentax 16 - 45 is the most popular (no surprise on a Pentax forum) and from others experiences I have decided to go for it. I won't be able to buy it for another week as I live 150 miles away out in the sticks but I emailed the seller and he said he would hold it for me. Thank you to everyone who has responded, the help is greatly appreciated!

Well, I bought the lens, a UV filter and a Hoya Circular pro1 polarizer for $185. It seems to work great but I haven't really tried it out yet as I have been away at a conference for the past couple of days. I am going to have to try it out more this weekend. Thanks for the recommendations!

I have one and I like it very much. I also have several lenses in the 25, 28 and 31 range, and 16 is substantially wider. For the price it is an excellent lens. Your only other options in a Pentax lens are at 15mm, 14mm and 12-24mm - all of which are substantially higher in price.

Good luck!

I had the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 stuck on my *istDS, but when I bought the K20D second hand it came with the 16-45. And now the Tamron is almost never used. the 16-45 is "always" on my camera. Enjoy!

Well worth buying. Sell two of your 18-55's and get a 16-45mm. The 16-45 has better colour & contrast. The kit lens needs to be stopped down for acceptable sharpness, the 16-45 does not, it is sharp from wide open. You gain a lot from 18 to 16mm, and you don't effectively lose range on the long end. The reason I say this is that the 16-45 is sharper at f4 than the 18-55 at f5.6, even after you crop from 45mm to 55mm.

Thanks for the response, Dan.

Hmm, how can I hide another lens purchase? I should have snaffled the one I saw on a recent holiday.

It's not a lens purchase. If you sell two 18-55's and buy one 16-45, you're downsizing.
