I just picked up a Sigma 4.5mm F2.8 EX DC Circular Fisheye lens. Since I like how ultra wide angle lenses create images I was eager to get it on the camera and try it out. I must be missing something, because it won't autofocus. I have tried every setting, checked and double checked, and just can't get the HSM thing to work.

Is there something I'm missing with setting up the camera? I really expected that I would be able to just mount the lens on the camera and start shooting.

I'm, using (well, at least attempting to use) it on my K10D. I usually shoot in manual mode, but I have tried every mode and setting the camera has and the lens refuses to focus automatically. I've turned the shake reduction off, selected all three focus modes on the front of the camera, i.e. "AF.S", "AF.C" and "MF", changed the metering modes, pressed the "AF" button so many times I think I'm gonna wear the paint off of it!

And yes I have the switch on the lens set to "AF". I did try switching it to "MF", then back, but still, nothing.

Did I just get stuck with a broken lens?

At that focal length, do you even need to bother to focus it?

Do you have firmware >= v1.30?

Looks like version 1.0.

So that may be the issue then?

Yup, you need fw 1.3 or greater to use hsm.

It doesn't seem to have much range, that's for sure.

Those are great, aren't they? I have all the stuff to build one except for the refrigerator. Taps, CO2 bottle, deposit kegs, and glasses. A whole case of heavy glass beer mugs.

And at my age, I need glasses!
