Sigma 170-500 Apo sluggish Zoom

Hi,

I recently brought the lens mentioned in the Topic and i have a minor "problem" with it.
Compared to my other lenses the Zoom is pretty sluggish.
It works well between 170-400mm but from 400-500mm i cant turn the ring around in a smooth motion. Its more like ~6 rough stops between these lenghes. So waht i want to know is if someone else here experienced the same with this lens or if i just got a bad copy.

Thanks in advance for any replys.

So I haven’t had this lens myself, but I know my friend had a similar problem with the zoom being not very smooth on his kit 18-55 Sony lens. What he did was simply to use the lens a lot, in fact shooting a sports event over a weekend. After that, the zoom worked perfectly. I don’t know if it’s just the fact that the oil isn’t properly spread, or something else, but I’d do this if you don’t get any better advice.

My copy is the opposite. I had to put a rubber band around my zoom ring because of extreme creep.
It may be just from sitting for a while, like waterbender said.

Must admit, mine's is a bit jerky, too.
Often zoom out only to have to adjust it back a touch as it can zoom out that bit too far, and vice-versa.

Well from 400 going to 500 you only need to put it to 500mm and leave the rest out. Maybe some plastic thing getting old inside the lens.

I had a DG version for this lens once and it is a fine lens for it's price. At 500mm and f9-f11 you have descent sharpness, but offcourse you need a Sunny day.
