The Online Photographer Rates Pentax as a great lens maker

#4 and right behind Leica, actually...

I don't mind agreeing with that list. Maybe a little high, but it makes sense to me.

I'm not surprised to see that two out of the top three are German. I've heard great things about Olympus glass, too, and Pentax has some legendary lenses which are coveted even among Canikon users.

I notice there's a large ad for Pentax on the side of the page, too.

Mike J. has spoken highly of Pentax lenses long before Pentax was a sponsor. I wouldn't read anything into that

Come to think of it, if Pentax wasn't very high on Mike's list then I might say he was inconsistent. Never fear, this list is entirely consistent with all of his posts that I've read over years and years.

And it's something most of us here already know and are enjoying the fruits of. Excellent quality glass.

Not only that, but two out of the top four are Japanese. Makes sense, since those are the only two countries still competing in the lens making business.

I'm more entertained by the flavor of the comments. A bit of pouting goin' down from the Fuji crowd. And the "explain yourself in detail" reactions are always great fun. It's his site and his experience.

A lot of posters hurt by the absence of some certain makers on that list.
Can't please everyone.
Now, if only I had the money to buy some of the Pentax lenses that I dream about...

Well the Olympus 150mm/f2 is a true charme lens. I love the output from that lens that a collegue uses on his E-5.

Pentax lenses are very nice to my idea, so I accept the 4th place

I think there is more to these then just rendering. Size, feel of the lenses as well as interesting rendering make a difference. Nikon and Canon tend to copy each other.

Anybody who has been around the photography world for a long time will agree with his assessment of Pentax lenses. Back in the day, Pentax was one of the biggest and well known manufacturers. Takumars were once the standard that other lenses were compared to.

Up to 10 years ago Pentax had a history of releasing outstanding lenses, but since then not even close What we have to look to in the past 10 years is pathetic compared to Leica, Canon and Nikon as those companies lenses designs have gone from strength to strength while we get plastic versions of 10 and 20 year old designs and SDM. OK Maybe that's a bit unfair but it's a struggle to think of many decent lens releases lately.

I've seen great things with Olympus glass - even on my good old XA film camera!

And if you have a Sony store nearby, go in and try the Zeiss 16-35, 85, and 135. You'll find yourself thinking about it until you realize only these three plus a body will cost you more than a top-shelf 12 lens Pentax kit!

Far from being a joke, this list has a lot of merit (sorry D800E owners, although I'd certainly love to have your 14-24 lens) and I think many of us realize our eyes do not deceive us when we look at our images. Pentax bodies (though good) may leave us uncertain at times (e.g. action AF, TTL flash), and 3rd party accessory support may be challenging, but it's hard to argue with the results we get.
