Sigma EX DG Macro 24-70mm f/2.8 Lens vs Pentax SMC DA 16-50mm f/2.8 Lens VGC

Hi!

I am a new one here. Also kind of new to photography. Several months ago got myself a k-01 on ebay for very cheap (around 250 with a 18-55 lens), the only reason of me buying it was that I really loved the design, even though I have read a number of threads about bad construction of the sd card slot door which is hard to close properly, also bad ergonomics overall. But while using it for two of my last holiday trips I have realised that I need something with a view finder, better lens, better ergonomics, strong body, and faster zoom, other then that I was totally happy with my k-01, and have to say, I have enjoyed the looks of people lol.

So now I am back to my uni, and have already spent day or two looking on the internet, what is the camera that will suit me most... Just putting it shortly, in reality I have around 800 ($1250) to spend. So I have bought a body only k5ii on ebay for 500 and now I am thinking about a lens.

I have used the 18-55 variable aperture lens on my k-01, and at most times, the focal lenght was set on the 18mm-24mm, and when I had to soom something in, that was in a long distance from me, I zoomed to 55mm and every single time I did it I kept feeling a lack of additional of 50-300mm focal length lol.

So now looking at the options for the k5ii, I basically have three of them:
1. Sigma EX DG Macro 24-70mm f/2.8 without HSM for around 230 ($353) (worried about the 24mm minimum focal length)
2. Pentax SMC DA 16-50mm f/2.8 Lens VGC for around 300 ($460)
3. Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 around 210 ($320)

Can you please let me know which one is the "best" and please explain why.

Thanks for your help!!

The 24-70mm is more of a lens designed for full-frame cameras, so you'll probably want one of the wider ones.

See this review for why the Tamron lens rocks:

I have not tested all lenses you mentioned but I can speak of the Tamron 17-50...
I use it 99% of time. Colours are fantastic and concerning sharpness, when aperture is set on 5.6 you can easily crop 100% and even more.
It is a brilliant lens in a fantastic price.
I really love it...

Get the 24-70 AND a DA15. A little more money, but the 15 is super!

I will personally vouch for Tamron 17-50. It's a very sharp lens provided you receive a good copy. Mine need to adjust focus by -4 to be sharp.
Nowadays I use Limited Lens.

Once you've gone the limited route, you'll never turn back.

Thanks for your comment! About the limited lenses, i just do not understand the hole thing about the prime single focal length, I just can not use a camera that has no focus at all... Maybe that is because of a lack of any experience.

I used to think like that and hence I bought the Tamron as a replacement for my kitlens. Image quality wise, you'll never go wrong with the Tamron. However, coupled with B-Grip and a constant f/2.8 lens, it's a bit heavy and slow on autofocus (noisy too) and hence this is where the limited primes comes in. Lighter, faster and better IQ.

For DA*16-50 you get weather sealing and SDM. I've never tried SDM before due to its bad reputation and the local dealers here in my location are selling it close to RRP with no discounts. So it's a bit troublesome if there is a problem with grey unit. However, it is still up to your preference and your budget.

By the way, Sigma 17-50 HSM is better than Tamron for an additional $100. If you put DA*16-50 into your consideration then I'm sure the Sigma 17-50 is within your budget. Sigma has the best of both world, it has better IQ than Tamron and HSM (similar to SDM) of the DA*. The only reason to get DA* would actually be only if weather sealing is important to you.

You also mentioned that you feel the lack of focal when you zoomed to 55mm and wished for additional focal length coverage. Since you can shoot K-01 in high ISO, I would suggest you to consider the Sigma 17-70 HSM | C lens. Make sure it's the contemporary edition with a letter "C" on the lens.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help guys. Most probably will be getting a tamron 17-50mm for now.
Really want to know, why can't they just release a lens with fixed aperture, of lets say 2.8 with a focal length of 10-250mm. I would pay any price for that...

Perhaps a totally different view: you have already got the 18-55 kit lens which is a very competent lens. You state that you hit the 55mm end and wish for more. Rather than getting another lens in the same range, perhaps you should look at the 55-300 lens....
