And I was just about to pick up a DA21 from the CRK store - not long ago it was $440, now in the blink of an eye it's $599. Swines. They can forget about it for that price.

Exactly! The DA21 was not even on the list of recent US price increases, so got no idea why they choose it to have a 33% price rise. They must randomly draw lenses out of a hat when it comes to price rises. The DA21 is definitely not a $599 lens.

Given all the Pentax gear I've bought at local retailers (and via dcxpert and some of the other 'non-official' CRK eBayers) over the last few years, I would have expected better than for them to just spit in my face like that.

Yes, I am annoyed.

Realistically those prices were pretty amazing for Australia, now they've returned to "OK". I paid $1,300 for the FA31, $990 for the FA77 and $660 for the DA21 locally a couple of years ago.

In my opinion, in terms of value, the prices were never in the "pretty amazing" category in Australia. Last week they were in the "OK" category, and this week they moved into the "expensive" section. Let's hope they don't creep into "ridiculous" territory here in Oz, which is where many of the overseas retailers and distibutors have placed pentax lenses.

When the AUD was 70c US, those prices had some logic. But we've had USD/AUD parity now (+/- 5%) for 6 months or so now. And the AUD/yen rate has in fact strenghtened from 80 to 100 yen/1 AUD in the last 12 months. So I can't see currency movements being responsible for stuff like overnight 33% price shifts.

Gee, not so long ago it was Adobe and Microsoft being hauled over the coals in a Senate Committee about AU tech pricing...

Are we peeved off with CRK because they had them so tantalisingly cheap for only a month or two. Seems a bit odd.

I'm annoyed with myself, not with them because it was me that didn't buy the lens I wanted when i had the chance.
"You snooze, you lose" as my son tells me.

I went looking for a DA21 last year and the prices mostly for the Sydney retailers and online are the same now.
CRK is the only exception.

Here's a list of current prices. See who is the cheapest.

CRK - 599
"dcxpert" ebay (CRK) - 525
B&H or Adorama 647 USD and 50 odd freight.
DCW - 695
digidirect - 660
camera warehouse - 699
dirt cheap cameras - 677
digital funstuff (in ultimo) - 645
Ryda - 649 (reduced from list price 799 !)
Ted's camera - 770 !! (but they will price match anything local)

and the "winner"
Vanbar imaging - 721 "on special" but out of stock.

In the end I bought looked for one on the PF marketplace.
they were going from 395 - 440 USD

I bought one from a member in Melbourne, I'd seen plenty of images he'd posted and pretty much knew there was no issues. We agreed on 440 and then when I received it he decided to give me 30 bucks part credit since many were listed cheaper. Sweet.

Great lens, excellent condition, and i've used it a lot in the last 6months. Tiniest movement in the front, but not any issue from this in the images. maybe I've got "tight" copies of the 15,43,70.

I wouldn't hesistate to buy again from a real PF member, (that posts images).. not just a "reseller", that way you may see what the lens can do in their hands.
The DA21 is a pretty robust and "simple" design and not SDM so the chances of problems would be lower.

Buying new is also no guarantee of getting a good lens.
Steve "bossa" just returned his new FA31 to CRK because of an internal problem.
Doug "digitalis" returned a new Sigma 8-16 because it was wayyy off centre (it was, he posted photos)

If you find a used one from a member that has used the lens well and has a genuine reason for selling (eg swapping systems, selling all APS-C lenses for FF, or setting up to all DA* zoom ) then there might be less risk in that option.

You cant travel back in time, so the options are:
"dcxpert" for 525 with warranty ......or
find a used one here from a trusted member..... or
sit and wait for .......

I'm not really "that" peeved in all honesty, I had plenty of chances to buy the DA21 in the past month like you said, but decided not to pull the trigger each time, so I agree, it's my fault. I guess my surprise being new to Pentax / dslr lens market in general is how prices can fluctuate so wildly without any logical rationale. The price swings are nuts.

Well, the Fa77 has turned up at work this morning. Lovely looking item. A few cat and dog portraits are in order tonight I think.

And vandbar if your are listening (which doubt you would) it takes twice as long to get something 30kms down the road from you than it takes from New York. Getting what you paid for, having to phone to find out what happened to the order etc etc adds to the entertainment. I prefer good service so when I need specialist gear I first go to B&H even though I prefer to use my money locally.

In defence of Vanbar, they did once-upon-a-time offer some good deals on two Pentax lenses I bought from them, and they also seemingly went out of their way to get ahold of an obscure Kenko teleconvertor for me once. Plus I have always found they pack their stuff really well.

But lately their pricing has been all over the place, and usually above average. Their website is also [still] a mess.

n defence of Vanbar,
I probably had a run of slack workers. They are probably the only real big photographic shop left in Melbourne the others being sale yards.

My FA77 turned up this morning too.. (Direct from CRK after buying via dcxpert... )

Mine has a spot of 'dust' (or whatever) inside so I'm not 100% pleased right now... ..and my FA31 has been in Melbourne for a week being checked out due to an element having either a scratch on the edge or the paint on the edge scratched off.

They did try to look after me with a replacement though but it had far too much 'wobble' in the front lens assembly for me and I rejected it. I have since been told that they could 'fix' that for me because there's none left to offer due to the stock shortfall.

I'm thinking of ditching Pentax again after these experiences... QC seems to be a dying 'art' in The Land of Pentax. The upside would be that I could sell for more than I paid due to the demise of the AU$ and the increasing local and OS prices.

I thought that buying from dcxpert guaranteed you were going to get a returned or refurbished item, rather than an untouched one. If that's the case then it's fairly likely you were going to get some issues. I would have also thought that a temporary replacement would have come the same way, so I suspect your judgment may have been a little harsh. Although my lens buying has slowed down considerably in recent times, I can only say that the one recent Pentax lens I've had issues with has been the 16-50, and that was purchased secondhand and at a fair price.

According to dcxpert's listings these lenses are NEW, UNOPENED and NOT refurbished. Where did you get that notion from?
