50mm 1.7+ AF TC 1.7 or DA70mm

Hi wonder if the M 50mm 1.7 lens + the Pentax AF TC 1.7 is as good as the DA70mm lens? I have the M 50mm and it is very sharp!!! is there any advantage besides better AF to go for the DA70

By the time you buy the T/C you are a fair way to a secondhand DA70. The T/C will degrade the image to some extent, and the AF on the T/C is limited in its range (the manual lens needs to be somewhere in the vicinity of the correct focus distance, so I understand) so its not a true AF setup either. An you still have manual metering. Go for a s/h DA70, IMHO.

This is not a teleconverter like other TCs. It is an Autofocus adapter. It was designed originally to add AF to manual lenses. (Sorry if you already knew that)

As such it will certainly work on your M 50mm but as already noted it is not an ideal situation. The quality will degrade, you will need to manually focus the 50mm to close to correct then use the AFA to lock correct focus. Not worth it IMHO for a 20mm gain. If you need 70mm get the DA 70, you will be way ahead.

In general I do not think a teleconverter is worth the trouble until you get up to 200mm lenses. Even then with digital and high megapixel cameras it is debatable whether the TC adds enough to be any better than just cropping the image. The 1.7x AFA has a place and is great at what it does but I don't think this is a good application for it.

Yep, DA70 no question.

It's an exceptional performer even from wide open, low CA, fast and accurate AF.

The DA70 is also more compact than either the 50/1.7 or the AFA 1.7x and the AFA 1.7x is rediculously priced because of relative few available.
So if you dont already have both the 50/1.7 and AFA 1.7x , go for the DA70. and even if you do have both, I'd still go for the DA70.

I have all three and the AFA is only ever used with a 300mm prime to gain the addtional reach.

If it works, don't let us try to stop you. But I do think a side by side with the 70mm would change your mind.

True auto-focus
Newer coatings
Far more convenient to operate
Much lighter
Camera controlled aperture
No need for stop down metering
