Looking for opinion on Sigma Tele Lens

Hi All,

I am looking for a new Telephoto Lens.

I have a K10D (and love it)

My main lens is a Sigma 18-50 2.8 which works very well for me and I am very pleased with the pictures it takes.

I need to get something with a bit of zoom to it and I have been looking at the Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 APO DG Macro lens.

Price seems to be pretty good and I have always been happy with Sigma Lenses.

Anyone have any thoughts to the lens?

Thanks

D.

The APO version of the lens is pretty sharp stopped down to f8 or so.

For the cost you can't go wrong with the Sigma 70-300. I have the non APO version and I am very pleased with it. If you can find the APO version it is supposed to be much better. When I bought mine the APO version was in short supply but I think it is the one on most dealer's shelves now.

Here is an image from the non APO version from about 30 feet away. There are some others on my site. Just follow the links to Sigma lens on my lens site Introduction

Heh. I just got a 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO from ebay today. Was listed just as a ZX50 body with lens, but the red ring gave it away and I picked it up for $76. can't wait to get home and try it out.

Check around for used prices on the 70-300 (either the Sigma or Tamron).. I think you can get the newest version for ~$150 used.. or ~$100 for the older versions.

You might want to bump the contrast, too. I go +2 a least, usually +3, in Photo Lab. Otherwise, images seem to be flat and lifeless.

Well I went to buy the lens today and then got a bit confused...

The difference in price between the APO and the non APO is a tad over $100

Is that $100 well spent or not?

Rather than getting the "sales man pitch" from a guy that is on commision I wouldn't mind getting the opinion of my Pentax Bretheran.

Thanks!

D.

When I was shopping around, a "professional" review said the Sigma APO was "the only budget tele worth buying." I don't know that is really true as the Tamron has some fans, but I imagine the $129 version of the Sigma lens is perhaps only fair.

I think the extra money is well spent for the APO. I have had one for about a year and really like it.

If I had the chance to get this lens for around $150 would it be worth it?

Word on the tamron vs the sigma apo is that the tamron is sharper, but suffers from PF over 200m. The sigma apo is softer, especially at the edges but has less PF.

Pick your poison I suppose. FWIW I would have bought the tamron if I hadn't got mine on ebay.

Purple fringe. The result of chromatic aberration in a lens. Typically seen on high contrast objects like tree branches against a bright sky.
