They swirl and multiply if left alone in a drawer ...

Thanks for the reply guys! Now I know that it's a problem on my part, not on the lens lol
And since we mentioned the Helios 44, I have a friend of mine who's about to sell me a Helios 44M-7.
How do this thing stack up to the 50mm 1.4 Takumar? And the 55mm 1.8?
Should I get the 55mm 1.8 or the Helios 44M-7? I heard the 44M has a swirly bokeh, but is that effect pronounced on an APS-C sensor as well as on the 7 version? SInce I heard it is best seen in the 44M-4
Also is the 50mm 1.4 SMC Takumar worth getting if I've already have the non-SMC version? How superior is the coating, does it solve the nasty CA issues? (I don't encounter flare much)

All swirly jokes aside, I would lean to the 55/1.8 over the 44M-7 which should have six blades as opposed to the 8 of a 44-2. I have a SupTak 55/1.8, several Helios 44M's & 44M-4's. I have not gotten the six bladed 44M-4 to swirl and the SupTak would be my preferred lens, despite its yellowing ...

I can get the 44-2's to swirl, but they annoy me sometimes because they wobble on the M42 adapter, but the 44M, 44M-4 & 44M-7 do not wobble because they seat directly on the mount and the adapter ...

I do not worry too much about coatings since I do not shoot into the sun and use a hood religiously ... good luck, J

I actually love the swirly bokeh and want to get it but I only have an APS-C camera.
Still should I get either of those lens if I already have a Super Takumar 50mm 1.4?

44M on my K-5 ...

Life's too short, so if you can get them cheap, why not?! Then again, I have M42 LBA ...

Totally agree with all of this, including the wobble! My experience on a APS-C camera is that the 44-2 is more "swirly" than the 44M. If I recall correctly, the 44M-7 is supposed to have "superior" coatings to previous Helios 44's. So if you get the 44M-7 for a good price (compared to ebay prices), get it! But don't expect it to be outrageously swirly, nor as good as the SMC Takumar 55mm.

Busy... it's positively nervous.

I like mine bokeh with cream, more like my SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.2 gives me.

As directed by the boss, the lens has to sit in a box as far away from us and the kids' bedrooms as possible, which isn't very far and is certainly not far enough for her. We have a granite kitchen top and eat bananas, so I've pointed out we are doomed anyway.

This is the youtube clip to show your aunt

Radioactive Lens -- Pentax 50mm f/1.4 S-M-C Takumar - YouTube
Wow, I knew it was radioactive but that is pretty scary. I won't be sleeping with my 50/1.4 under the pillow, that's for sure (I don't think it would be very comfortable anyway...).

I don't think there'a a SMC 55mm 1.8 - or at least not one that I can get my hands on. So the 44M-7 is my best bet? Or should I get the 44-2 for even more swirl?

Here's the k mount SMC 55mm, they are not very easy to find, compared to the Tak 55mm 1.8 or 2:

SMC Pentax 55mm F1.8 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

If you're offered a good condition, inexpensive 44M-7, perhaps buy it (never used one myself personally so can't help), and then buy the swirly 44-2 as soon as you find a good one. Mine cost me $25, and the 44M $15, so they are not expensive.

Grreetings, i am new here.
Have Helios 44m-4 and 44m-6, second one i sharper and some say that 44m-7 is shatpest. Stand back 3-5 meters and u will get great swirl bokeh. Here u the sample close one with messy background.
Welcome to the Pentax Forums!

This thread has been inactive for 1 1/2 years. You might want to start a new thread showing the swirly bokeh from your Helios lenses. That is a recurring subject of interest here.

I've heard great things about this lens so I picked up one (non SMC version) though now I find it to be not sharp enough wide open and has some kinda strange, if not bad bokeh. (well i don't really know what is bad and good, but the ring is pretty pronounced here so i think it's bad)

Here's a sample photo attached. All opinions are welcome. Thanks!

The bokeh disc with the brighter outer ring is the form in the 50/1.4 7 element (most common) Super Tak. I noticed it very soon after I got mine and have not particularly liked the effect. But there is one of the forum members from Hong Kong who uses that effect well. My lens preference is for the 55/1.8 which does not exhibit this effect.
