What about the Tokina 16-50/50-135 combo?

I just saw a magazine ad for these.....

Does anyone know anything about em?

Not available in Pentax mount, presumably because of similarity/collaboration with Pentax on lens designs.

I think corresponding Pentax DA* lenses are based on these Tokina designs. They are a little cheaper than the Pentax DA*s, but do not have weather sealing, and are not available for Pentax. From what I have seen on photozone, their performance is also very similar (including centering defects in the 16-50).

Let me add to that, no famous SMC coating either. Pentax's SMC coating is probably among the finest.

Yeah, what's up with Tokina? Why they do not offer their lense lineup with Pentax mount? It is not like Pentax mount is something out of this world. It has been like that for decades

Obviously for joint developments there's no sense in partners then becoming competitors with each other (apart from having been written into contractual agreements).

They're seperate businesses pure & simple. I'd be interested to know how well those Tokina lenses sell for other mounts, there's a few attractive ones now (12-24 f4, 16-50, 50-135 etc). Of course no supersonic focusing though.

The 10-17 fisheye is a good (or bad??) example.
In Pentax name it's been selling around $400 in US; minus rebate it was as low as $299.

In Tokina name for other mounts, it's all $500+ last time I looked.
