Should I trade my 50mm 1.4 for a 30mm 1.4?

50mm is a Pentax and 30mm is the sigma. I heard you can shoot wide open on the sigma and the shots I've seen are amazing. I shoot with a K-r and have have 1/12 hit ration shooting wide open with the 50.

Anyways I just bought a 10-17mm so I've reached my wife's lens limit for the year, but really want this 30. Should I do it? If so, anyone wanna trade?

I assume that's the FA50/1.4 you're taking about. It's not like it's hard to find another one, and it isn't so special that you could be giving up an "awesome" copy. So you should trade it if you're interested in trying the Sigma 30/1.4.

I trust that selling it and then buying the 30 elsewhere still counts as a trade - much easier!

One caveat, the Sigma is very prone to front/back focus. If you buy a used one, make sure it is still under warranty, and you get the original receipt, and then Sigma will calibrate it to your KR for free. It makes a huge difference. You may want to ask Sigma the price of the calibration service BEFORE you buy a lens without the original receipt.

If you shoot outdoors, keep the 50. Indoors, the 30 is super, and the 50 is too long.

I have both, I love Sigma 30mm for street shots but I reach for 50mm and longer for portraits. So I wouldn't trade one for another. 50mm does street too so for me it's more versatile focal length.

Hm, keep in mind that the difference between the two lenses isn't just FoV and sharpness. They render quite differently, especially OoF highlights (triangular bokeh?). And they might have differences in AF speeds.. But the 30mm might be more useful on APS-C. Just depends what you usually photograph.
You can also think about Pentax options in that focal length, like the FA 35mm f2.0, DA 35mm f2.4, DA 35mm f2,8 ltd., DA 40mm f2.8 ltd/XS,.. Even the 21mm, some people really like that focal length.

That's a bit low. Try AF adjust, try live view focusing.. maybe improve your focusing technique, try faster shutter speeds? Maybe its the lens, and an exchange would in fact help you. Or is it just because the DoF is too shallow at f1.4?

I have both, and I agree with the others here. One lens is not a replacement for the other. The FA50 has the smoothest bokeh I've ever seen, and the colors are warm and pleasant, so it's well-suited for portraits. The Sigma, because of the "normal" focal length, is more of a general-purpose lens. It's sharper in the center than the Pentax, but corners are very soft, and it vignettes heavily at wide apertures. The Pentax, with it's film-era coatings, is prone to purple fringing. The Sigma's bokeh is much more energetic, but not necessarily unpleasant.

That said, I use the Sigma far more than the Pentax. If you have to get rid of the FA50 to get the Sigma, do it. It's an amazing lens.
