i am new to DSLR

I am new to DSLR and i was wondering if i could use lenses i had for old flim SLR on a new digital body?

The general answer is: yes.
The other way around (DSLR specific lens to SLR): no.

As I've just received my adaptor today, I can tell you from fresh experience: You can.

This is for several old M42 lenses that I have, which now connect to my K10d using an adaptor.

I think you can use any older Versions of the PK bayonet as well, but I can not comfirm this from my own experience.

Be careful if you buy an adaptor, there are some that do not allow infinte focus.

There are several sites on the web providing sample shots with old to really old lenses on DSLRs.

Keep in mind the crop factor of 1.5 for most DSLRs.
