The 35 is generally a better focal length for walking around, but you should get the FA50/1.7 if it's a reasonable price. They're a little hard to find. For some reason I can't explain, they're a bit better than the F50/1.7 (mine was, and many others have had the same experience). The only better AF 50 is the F50/1.4 (also hard to find), and only by a small margin. The only thing that would make you want to sell one of these is the acquisition of one of the three top-level "50's" - the FA43, the DA*55, or the K/A50/1.2. But without going to that (significantly more expensive) top tier you can't get any better.

The DA35/2.4 is probably the better fit for your purpose, but pick up the hard to find lenses when you get the chance (assuming you need or can use them).

Jay Maisel uses long zooms:

"walkaround" is subjective.

Looking at what lenses you already have I wondered about the 35DDA however you asked about a lens that you could give to a stranger to use as well. Under those circumstances I would vote the 35DA 2.4 as well. It is the lens that is on my K-r the most. Having said that once the 50 F 1.7 is on it stays on for some time as well. But of the two for walking about and asking strangers to take your photo etc the 35 is the better choice in most instances.

But my first camera had no zooms so the 50 or was it a 55 for my Spotmatic F was my walkabout lens for over a dozen years with only 28,135 and 200 to complement it hence I think I trained myself to think of my world from a 'normal lens'.

Thanks everyone!

I think I will get the DA35 and "trade" the A50 for FA50. Sounds like a plan?

That's probably the way to go. The 35 is much better for walkaround since it's the "natual" field of view on an APS-C. I took my F 50/1.7 on a "walkaround" through an abandoned mental hospital complex and found it too tight for general shooting. And there were spots where I couldn't just walk back and get more in the frame. I guess for the best walkaround you'd need a 24-70ish zoom but I was definitely wishing I had a 35 to pair with my 50. Or a 40mm Limited.

That being said, I made do with what I had and got some nice shots. An FA50 definitely won't dissapoint.

As good as my plan was, it was vetoed. So with only one lens to purchase, I ended up getting the 50/1.7. The lens is razor sharp in the center from wide open and the corners become very sharp by 4.0. I am thinking for walk around I will just use 20/3.5 and turn to hyper focus before I hand to a stranger to take a photo. I can always grt the da30 if the 20mm doesn't work out - and an argument for why I need another lens!
