I believe the 12-24 was actually designed by Pentax and the German lens firm...Schneider. I recall reading something in a British magazine about this.
I have also heard that when Hoya took over Pentax...Hoya also owns Tokina and I believe some Pentax lenses became Tokina (Pentax) so Hoya could offer them with Canon and Nikon mounts.

However a lot of who makes what is speculation for as a previous poster stated...we need a road map.

Remember Pentax is an old Japanese (est. 1919) optical company and was originally known as Asahi Optical Company.
I believe the 12-24 is a Tokina design. However, Pentax did license a number of lenses (16-50, 35 macro, 50-135, 10-17 FE) to Tokina in the pre-Hoya days when their camera division was bleeding cash.

Vivitar no longer exists in its old incarnation -- now it is just a name. Bought by Sakar..
It is very interesting to read how various companies get bought and sold over time. I love reading this stuff.

Regarding Vivitar - the article at The Australian Way | Camera | All-Pages - indicates that it was purchased by Hanimex (founded in Australia in 1947 by a German born immigrant) in 1985. Hanimex is currently owned by Fuji but was at one time owned by Ricoh.

I have to disagree with you. I recall reading that the Pentax 12-24 was designed in conjunction with Schneider. Why would you think Tokina designed the 12-24 ?

Douglas of Sweden several years ago posted links to patents of the "co-designed" lenses. All of them were held by Pentax, except for the 12-24 which was held by Tokina. I tried to find a link to it, but I couldn't.

The unexpected digression into the history of Vivitar was unexpected, but cool!
