FWIW, the best lens review that I've seen which directly comments on the improved nature of the '18-55 II' design vs the previous 18-55 is lenstip.com's review of the 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II, especially here on the resolution page of the test.

I have the DA 18-55 AL II and the WR version which are optically identical which came with my K20D and K5D cameras, the extra cost over the body price was peanuts. They are excellent lenses, light and optically good and its a shame that I have a 16-50 that hogs the limelight. For me they are keepers.
