Tamron 18-200 question

I was going to purchase the Tammy 18-200 for Pentax, but it seems everyone is out of stock. There is a $30 rebate from tamron so maybe thats why. anyway a retailer offered me a promaster which he says is made by tamron for the rebate price I would have received from tamron. Is this legit? or is there anything else out there in the same price range. thanks

Promaster is quite often a re-labeled Tamron though not always - but I believe it's true with the 18-200. It may not have the six-year warranty that Tamron offers.

Posts: 3,862 lists the 18-200 mm for $199 and in stock.

You get what you pay for - the build quality is so-so but you have a 6 years warranty period with Tamron to get it fixed so that's a plus. The issue is the rubber cladding on the zoom ring - it gets larger over time, too lose to use and will need replacement.

Yes, Promaster has a rebadged version of this lens. If you don't mind used, one's for sale on the marketplace right now:

I have the Tamron version, which I bought used for $145. For the price, I couldn't be more pleased. Despite what people say, it's a great budget super-zoom: compact, solidly built, and very sharp. The only thing I don't like about it is the bokeh, but that's highly subjective. I haven't noticed any looseness in the zoom ring rubber, but if I did, I'd just replace it with section of bike inner tube. It's just a cheap zoom, right?

Here's a sample. Click it and select the "O" size for full resolution. It was taken with a K-r at 18mm and f/8.

I agree - I have this lens and it is a competent, good value lens and very versatile. Pity it's not f4 all the way, but still

DxO Optics Pro also has an excellent lens module for it in Pentax that helps tune it up some.

Just don't put a teleconvertor or crappy UV filter on it.
