With the lens sitting in the shop for more than two months, I've called for a more complete explanation of the issue.

I called CRIS and asked for a replacement lens; they transferred me to Ricoh customer service, which said that a replacement lens will not arrive any faster than the replacement part needed to fix the 60-250mm already in the shop. This is because of the Pentax-Ricoh transition: the Pentax warehouse in Colorado has been shut down, and all items are being moved to two Ricoh warehouses in Indiana and Texas. The part is expected to arrive at the service center in about two weeks, and the lens should be fixed and sent back to me within a week after that.

This is one hell of a trial. Hopefully they are not bull-shitting you and you do receive it within 3 weeks...

I think all those student athletes you were planning to photograph have since graduated.

This sounds about as impressive as the Ricoh stand at the PhotoPlus tradeshow. Sorry about your plight.

Pentax Canada have been great to deal with in Toronto though I must say.

This scares the holy cr@p out of me. I finally thought it might be ok come come out side again a try a SDM lens. The lens I wanted was the 60-250mm. Now I am back in the doldrums of what to do. I just do not want to spend that kind of money only to get a run around with Pentax and their SDM lenses.

I'm in the same boat. As useful as silent autofocus would be, there's no real advantage if it's not as reliable as "noisy" screwdrive.

Still holding out on SDM, but I'm wavering since I bought the K-3. I would really like them to come out with SDM II so I can buy some professional quality lenses or put a longer warranty on the lense to build my confidence.

The lens comes back in worse shape than before!

The focus plane is tilted, with the right side focusing closer than the left side, causing either side of the image to become very soft. I am sending it in again, asking C.R.I.S. to replace the entire lens if possible.

Sorry to hear that. It's so frustrating. I bought mine back in Aug and it's Hoya stock. Hopefully the motor holds out, otherwise I'd have to bypass the SDM.

This has been the one thing to keep me away from the 18-135WR lens - screwdrive has been reliable on my K-x and K-30.
I don't want to pony up ~$500 for a lens that will die due to design flaws in SDM. Sigma has been able to do it with HSM.

Don't confuse SDM failures with 18-135mm DC reliability. DC is extremely reliable.
