Bigma Now or Bigma Later?

Hi all,
So...I am looking to pick up a Bigma lens. I really like the reach and the IQ of this lens. However, now is my question. Should I go ahead and pick up the current 50-500mm version or wait and possibly get the 150-500mm.

Pros 50-500mm
- Better quality (EX)?
- Longer focal length, 'one lens does most'
- Better warranty?

Pros 150-500mm
- HSM!

'Cons' for each are the 'pros' for the other.

So, how important is HSM? Should this be the main deciding factor between the two lenses (assuming IQ is the same)? Am I missing other considerations?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Didn't realise they were planning a 150-500mm HSM. Is this on a new road map?

I would have thought someone would have an opinion on this? I am a new user to this forum and surprised nobody is helping a newbie out!

Well it is a purely personal choice. Also not sure if anyone has the 150-500. I have the 50-500 I picked it up last fall so I have not had a real chance to get out in the summer. For what I have used it for, I really enjoy the wide range. I did use it on a recent holiday for some beach shots and the reach came in handy as well backing off to 50mm. The IQ is very good. It is a big lens , but it can be hand held at all focal lengths it works even better with a monopod. I have a 1.7x that I can use for moon shots.

Is HSM important? The AF is noisy as it is on most non HSM lens. I am not sure the HSM makes the AF any faster. You are losing a 100mm (50-150) . I am not sure on the size different. For me personally I would wait and see what the IQ is. HSM would not be a deal breaker for me; even with wildlife photography you can use MF so that is quiet. HSM + weather sealing would be a better combo and might sway my decision give all other factors relatively equal.

If you have 50-150 covered (say a DA* 50-135) then maybe a no brainer. It all depends on what you shoot and how you shoot. IQ, IQ then IQ would be my top 3 considerations. Then maybe size, build quality and then perks (HSM , weather sealing etc).

I know this did not recommend one over the other. All I can say is I am keeping my Bigma and looking forward to spring and summer! HSM would not be a make or break factor for me.

The Bigma is an excellent lens, and up until recently has been the only reasonable (read "under $1000+") choice out there for Pentax at 500mm and autofocus. Still, it's a very nice lens.

The 150-500 is a new lens and I haven't heard of anyone that has it. If the Sigma HSM is like the Pentax SDM, then that would be nice. I think the SDM focusing is slightly faster than the older, in-body motor focusing, but that has not been officially proven. If the 150-500 was as sharp as the Bigma and the price was similar, I'd go with the 150-500 and give up the "wider" end.

Until the 150-500 becomes widely available, you'll just have to either take a chance or wait for reviews. You won't be "settling" if you decide on the Bigma, though. It's a very fine lens and very versatile. These were all taken with the Bigma, handheld.

Thanks for all the info and opinions guys. Based on what you've said, I think the current 50-500 bigma may be the way to go. I can really see the utility in having the wide focal length. Having to carry fewer lenses is never a bad thing when on a hike, vacation, etc.

I just noticed that Dell has them on sale for $899 (not including tax). Very tempting.

BTW

Just noticed that according to your link HSM isn't yet offered on the 150-500mm lens.

I'm not sure I'd want to hike very far with the Bigma. If you really want to travel light and maintain some versatility of focal length, take a look at the Tamron or Pentax 18-250. Image quality is just about as nice as the Bigma (minus the reach of course), but it's much smaller and lighter. I have both the Bigma and the Tamron, and I regularly use both. In my mind they are completely different tools. I bought the 18-250 as my one-lens travel solution.

It does have HSM, the footnote indicates that it will NOT autofocus on older non-SDM bodies (D, DS, DL, K100D, K110D)
