The FA50/1.4 has some competition now

Sigma has come out with their version of the 50/1.4. I wonder how it's going to stack up to the Pentax version.

Sigma - Lenses

Very interesting...

hmmm, no AF on older Pentax models though. Wondering how it will compare to the Pentax versions of the "fast 50"

Actually I see little or no competition.

The Sigma is meant for digital so the image circle is smaller than the FA 50mm, which has an image circle that covers 35mm flim. In other words, if there is a FF down the road, one can still use the FA 50 but probably not the Sigma.

The FA 50 is a fine lens that's very well priced plus it has Pentax's SMC coating. Personally I like the colour rendition from current Pentax lenses.

Interesting indeed... Still want to see how well their HSM works with Pentax supported bodies.

According to dpreview, this is a full-frame lens...

creampuff, the new sigma is a 'DG' lens that will work on FF bodies. The note about autofocusing means that it has a motor built into the lens and no provision for body-driven AF. A HSM fast 50 for pentax could prove interesting. I see this competing more with the as-yet-to-be-released DA* 55. Interesting note, the lens roadmap was updated today (3-18-2008).

You are correct, designated DG not DC, full frame indeed...

According to Sigma, this is a DC lens. Sigma - Lenses

However, Sigma says this lens will work with all DSLR. That means it will also work with FF cameras.

stevebrot & clawhamemr, thanks for pointing it out my error. Yes it is both a DG & DC lens.

Anyway the FA50's screw drive focuses fast enough in my book. It would be good to see it's optical performance and whether it is free from any of the focus issues that Sigma's other f/1.4 lens is reported to have.

I guess Sigma will be ~77mm vs 49mm from Pentax

This is a very exciting development indeed. We can never have enough 50mm lenses, in my opinion It would be interesting to see how this compares with the DA*55/1.4. Of course, the DA* would have weather seals, so that is a big plus. Also, looks like the sigma uses ring type motors, which are generally superior (faster?) to the micro-motors that pentax uses in its SDM lenses.

Well, you are both right. Earlier this morning, it was listed as DG/DC. Now it's just DG
