Beginner Wide Angle Question

Since DSLRs have a smaller sensor, can you achieve a 180 degree field of view with just any fisheye lenses? Thanks in advance!

On the contrary, smaller sensors need smaller focal lengths to achieve 180 DIAGONAL field of view. For example, the F17-28 zoom, designed for 24x36 film, goes from 180 at 17mm to 90 at 28 whereas the DA10-17 goes from 180 to 100 on APS-C sensors.

If you look at the lens review database:
Pentax Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database
It usually lists the angle of view for FF and APS-C

Good Morning,

The simplistic answer is yes it does - across the diagonal of the lens (top corner to bottom corner). From there, you can ask plenty of questions and the answers become progressively more complex, because of how fisheye lenses are designed. Here is an older thread that addresses the entire topic. The reason for the complexity is how the optical engineer designs the lenses, and it all comes down to the type of projection that is used. You can get a sense of this by looking at a fisheye image, that has been defished, and see what the two images (the scene as a figheye and then its conversion to a standard view). This link does probably the best job at this that I have come across.hope that helps.
