DA15 rental for Hawaii

I'm going to Hawaii in a couple weeks and I'm thinking about renting the DA15. The rental price, with a 49-58mm step-up ring (they don't carry 49mm fliters) and two filters comes out to $98. Seems like a bit much. Will there be a drastic difference with the DA15 compared to the 18-135WR?

You will get some great shots with it, especially when the sun is in the frame, since the da15 really excels in flare control vs the zoom.
$98 is a20% down payment on a good used one, IMO, so if you are even considering owning it, why not buy it? You can always flip it later if it isn't for you.

Not looking to buy right now due to recently spending over $1,000 on the K30, lens, and accessories...not to mention the money that will be spent on the upcoming trip

I would say about the same price as buying new and selling it later, minus the hassle of selling it yourself later (downside is there is a time limit to use the lens).

$98 is OK in my opinion, many ppl spend that amount of money on a single meal in Hawaii.

so consider one less dine out on the trip and you are covered.

It is a great lens and for the vistas that you will encounter it will excel over the kit lens a great deal. The difference between 18mm and 15mm is a good bit on APS-C. And as has been mentioned the flare control on it, Summer in Hawaii, is excellent.

There tends to be a significant difference with every millimeter below 24mm. The DA15 is a very special lens and comes with a lifetime supply of pixie dust that makes all pictures better (I'm not kidding here - read the 'DA15 limited rules my mind' thread on this site). You don't need filters for it, in fact they would be hard to use with it. Don't bother with those.

Really!? A polarizer or a ND won't be necessary? If this is true then it makes my choice much easier.

I never shoot my DA 15 with a polarizer. ND filter is a different story, if you want longer exposures in good light, but I don't use one much.

No polarizer as the 15 really handles flare and other light issues exceedingly well. ND is completely different and that is one you should consider for Hawaii in the Summer.

My only option to rent is a 58mm 0.6 ND filter, with a 49mm-58mm step-up ring. Anyone see any issues with that? Is 0.6 not going to be dark enough for bright days? Will the hood interfere with the step-up ring?

Why don't you just buy a ND filter? 49mm filters are not too pricey and they cover all of the DA limiteds and the FA 77 and the DFA 100 WR, if you might invest in any of those lenses in the future...

Anyway, the small filter size is awfully handy (although you might get vignetting if you don't get a slim one).

that's no good. you want a 49mm filter for the DA15, no step up because the built-in hood will interfere.

The prices are cheaper then I expected...thanks for the kick in the butt! I may get a Limited lens one day, too. Now to decide which one...

Tiffen 3 stop for $16, Hoya 9 stop for $35, or B&W 10 stop for $56?
