Tossing up to buy...

I'm looking at replacing my Sigma 55-200 DC, apart from wanting the extra length I find its operation a bit stiff.
The choice I'm down to is the Sigma 70-300/4-5.6 APO macro DG or Pentax FA J 75-300/4.5-5.8 AL.
Would anyone here have any opinion about which would be a "better" lens? All comments welcome.

Sorry, just to add - I have read the threads on the Sigma 70-300 here, and the review, it appears a goodie, but can't find info on the Pentax.

If I were you, I'd consider the Pentax FA 80-320mm F4.5-5.6 instead of the FA J. Its build and optics are superior.

I don't know anything about the sigma, however, so I can't help you with that.

I like the 70-300mm Sigma over the Pentax 75-300mm but I've pretty much decided on saving for the Tamron instead.

I went to Vistek to sample the Tamron and I found it has a good feel and build quality. I liked the zoom ring. The only thing stopping me from getting a Sigma is the higher cost...but what's an extra $60-70 CDN ($250 vs. $320)?

I haven't seen photos from the 80-320mm and Edvinas in an earlier thread said to consider it as well - Mo, can you post a few sample photos here for us?

Bit more research seems to indicate the Pentax FA J 75-300/4.5-5.8 AL is softish beyond 200mm. It would appear the Sigma 70-300/4-5.6 APO macro DG is the better lens then.

Your findings are the same as mine. I found the Pentax FAJ too soft for me from 275mm (maybe even 250mm) onward.

Waiting for samples pics from this 80-320 with much anticipation. Another lens to consider - the 70-210 Vivitar Series 1. Although it's a manual focus lens, it really floored me. Look for Lisa's (?) posts she has some awesome shots from an NHL game.

210 is a bit short. As I said above I can't find a 80-320 here in NZ.

Thanks for your confirmation of what I found out.

There are a couple of the older Tamron 28-300 XR's on ebay right now. I have one and find that the image quality is fine for me. Plus, the range is very convenient (nice travel size). I'd put it in the same price/image category as some of the other zooms mentioned here.

I wouldn't use ebay as it doesn't have a presence here, maybe I'm too cautious, but I can live with it. Thanks anyway.
