SMC Pentax-DA* 55mm $375

I found a craigslist ad in my local area for a SMC Pentax-DA* 55mm for 400 dollars !! In the description I talked him down 25 bucks but the only thing wrong that he states is a small dent on the lens hood mount. The picture shows part of it missing aka not going to be able to use any filters or hood. I am meeting with him tomorrow is there anything that I should look for before purchasing.

Make sure the SDM focusing system works and doesn't need a "warm-up" time.

Sounds like the same one I thought of buying. I passed it as I was worried that it could have been dropped which might have screwed it up
The question is a few posts down

Thanks

Make sure the focusing works at close and far ranges. Listen for any loud squeaks/whines. Make sure the focus ring moves smoothly and there is no grinding.

Takes a few seconds to start to focus after you push the button 1/2 way down. My warm up is now a dead SDM.

Cheers

Wow funny that is the exact same lens. I feel like I should be able to get a really good look at before handing him the moola as I am meeting him. I can take a look at the aperture blades and everything you guys have pointed out above

Which could very well be indicative of impact damage--there's a possibility that one of the lens elements could have been mispositioned a millimeter or two which can have a negative effect on image quality.

Is there any way you could do a test shot in order to check the plane of sharpness before parting with your cash?

Yes I will be able to, but I would most likely only be able to look on the lcd on the back of the camera. Is there something I can print out to take a picture with and look for like graph paper or something?

How did you make out? Did you end up purchasing it?

Cheers

Ended up working. I was looking over everything taking some test shots. Only thing wrong with it was it was quite dusty. Here is some boring test shot I can not see anything wrong with it, but I also don't have the best eye for minute detail.

P.S shots were taken at 1.4, so not exactly the sharpest
